Cult leader gets death for murdering 190 kids: Will Kenya carry out its first execution in 39 years?

A Kenyan court has sentenced cult leader Paul Nthenge Mackenzie to death following his conviction for the murder of 191 children connected to the Good News International Church. The victims died after being ordered to starve themselves to meet Jesus Christ before the world ended, with their bodies subsequently discovered buried in shallow graves throughout Shakahola Forest.

Mackenzie and several dozen co-defendants were prosecuted on hundreds of murder, terrorism, and child cruelty charges after authorities uncovered over 440 bodies in the remote coastal forest. The extreme tragedy prompted widespread condemnation and intense scrutiny over regulatory oversight of religious institutions in Kenya.

The ruling has reignited intense debate regarding capital punishment in Kenya. Although local statutes still permit capital sentencing for heinous crimes, the country has maintained a de facto moratorium on executions, having carried out no judicial killings since 1987. Consequently, Mackenzie’s sentence is expected to be commuted to life imprisonment unless executive authorities specifically order an execution to proceed.
