That's Life: Escaping a cult: How Briell rebuilt her life.
• Born into a radical religious sect, 18-year-old Briell was isolated entirely from the outside world
• Growing up, she was taught that it was normal for men to be married to at least three women
• Then came the day when she was forced to wed the cult leader, who already had 64 wives
Briell, now 39, tells her story in her own words.

Catholic Weekly: Monica Doumit: The cult is in the eye of the beholder
" ... Attention is increasingly focused on a slight variation of the former: the debate isn't about whether we should have a state-imposed religion, but rather whether there are some religious beliefs and practices that the State should intervene and prohibit.

We had our first taste of this with the prohibitions on so-called conversion practices, which, in addition to outlawing harmful practices like electroshock therapy, have also banned consensual prayer in some cases.

The result is that a person who wants to abide by their religious beliefs on sexual ethics is banned by the State from seeking prayer or counsel from a spiritual leader to do so, with the threat of the religious leader being imprisoned if they try to help.

Now we have the Victorian inquiry into cults, the parliamentary hearings on which you will read about in this week's edition of The Catholic Weekly. While purportedly aimed at ensuring no one is coerced into religious practice, the terms of reference are so broad that they capture even mainstream Christian teaching.

The potential outcome of this inquiry would be laws that would prohibit certain religious beliefs or practices, and that's where we get into very dangerous territory.

For example, those who allege a religious group is a cult will often talk about hierarchical structures, male-only leadership, traditional sexual ethics and a demand for modest dress.
But an orthodox view of all the major religions would reveal similar complaints, would it not?

Should millennia-old leadership structures or teachings on sexual morality now be seen as indicative of a cult, simply because the last 50 years has seen many in our society throw away these norms?

Even more basic teachings are under the spotlight.

As one of the witnesses at the inquiry noted, talk about sin and its eternal consequences could be judged as coercive, especially if a religious leader is bold enough to warn people that certain activities done in rejection of God and his plan for us could send them to hell.

While some members of the parliamentary committee would consider such language to be archaic and even harmful, and would readily seek to see such teachings banned, we need to be very careful here.

Even though Catholics are the largest religious grouping in the country by far and feel safe from the "cult" label, the bigger principle at play is the extent to which the State should be allowed to prohibit religious belief or practice because they know better than the believers themselves about what might harm them."

EckankarThe Church of Immortal Consciousness, NXIVM

RNS: New Age spiritual group Eckankar will soon have its first new leader in 44 years
" ...Some of the world's ECKists, who reside in more than 120 countries, predominantly in Europe and Africa, will converge at the ... [Temple of ECK in rural Minnesota] for their annual Worldwide Soul Adventure seminar. This year, they will also celebrate 60 years since Eckankar's founding and ring in a new spiritual year, themed "the year of light and sound."

But this year's gathering is significant for another reason: Sri Harold Klemp, the living ECK master, will formally introduce his successor, marking the first leadership transition in Eckankar in more than 4 decades. An unknown male, considered to be part of Klemp's spiritual lineage, to be announced at the event, is to carry the group into the next 60-year cycle."

A Little Bit Culty: The Church of Immortal Consciousness wasn't precisely a "chess cult."
But it did produce a master chess player and tomorrow's guest, Danny Rensch.

Danny's journey within the Arizona-based group led to his affinity and passion for chess, as well as some severe mental and physical trauma.

Tomorrow kicks off our two-parter with Danny, where he covers everything from growing up in the group, how chess became his "purpose," and how he walked away from immortal consciousness.

Plus, he talks about his memoir "Dark Squares" and the role chess continues to play in his life today. Danny's story is one of the most captivating we've heard recently, and we can't wait for you to listen to it too.

"In September, Han Hak Ja, the leader of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (commonly known as the Unification Church), who referred to herself as the "only daughter," was arrested on charges of delivering political funds and bribery worth hundreds of millions of KRW. Questions remain about the origin and purpose of the large sums of money allegedly funneled into politics. 'PD Note' obtained exclusive USB documents detailing the flow of funds within the Unification Church, seeking to uncover where the donations, given by followers to fulfill what they believed to be "heaven's will," actually went.

In the middle of Jangrak Mountain in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeon County, a massive white palace stands as a striking landmark. Constructed under Han Hak Ja's direction in the name of building a "heaven on earth," the palace, known as Cheonwon Palace, is said by insiders to be extravagantly decorated, with chandeliers costing tens of millions of KRW. Dubbed the "sanctuary of the heavenly parents," the palace conceals many secrets. Using exclusive documents, 'PD Note' investigates the massive funds behind the lavish palace and traces how the church's money was actually used."
The former self-help guru and convicted sex slave ringleader is seeking to vacate his convictions by accusing the FBI of planting falsified evidence of underage sexual exploitation on his computer's hard drive.

"Imprisoned sex cult leader Keith Raniere urged a federal appeals panel on Tuesday to revive his bid for a new trial because the claims federal investigators manufactured evidence of child pornography and planted it on a computer hard drive to link him to child pornography and sexual exploitation RICO predicate acts.

Raniere, 65, founded NXIVM as a purported self-help group in the 1990s and was accused at trial of later creating a secretive inner circle subgroup within the organization known as DOS or "The Vow."

Its female members said they served as "slaves" for Raniere and "masters" who recruited additional new slaves to serve Raniere, who was known as "the Vanguard."

They said each new DOS recruit, or "slave," was forced to provide collateral, like sexually explicit photographs or other personal information, which turned into a monthly pattern of extortion, and at Raniere's direction, the women would sear his initials on one another with a branding iron, without anesthesia.

During a six-week trial in Brooklyn federal court, witnesses detailed sexual abuse, control, and manipulation at the hands of Raniere. He was sentenced to 120 years of prison after being convicted on all seven counts, which included sex trafficking, forced labor, and wire fraud.

The fraud charge alone included 11 racketeering acts, among them creation and possession of child pornography, conspiracy to commit identity theft, and extortion."
"Christian leaders have cautioned against creating coercive control laws for cults over fears that legitimate religious groups could be captured.

Methods used by cults and organised fringe groups to recruit and control members are being probed by a Victorian parliamentary inquiry, as well as the impacts of coercive control.

In public hearings on Tuesday, the Australian Christian Lobby argued existing laws were sufficient to address criminal and abusive behaviour within cults.

There is no legal definition of a cult in Australia, and Victoria does not explicitly criminalise coercive control as a separate behaviour, with examples such as threats and intimidation subject to family violence laws.

Queensland is the second Australian jurisdiction behind NSW to criminalise coercive control, with the laws triggered by the 2020 murder of Hannah Clarke and her three children.

The lobby's Victorian director, Jasmine Yuen, told the inquiry that new legislation would be redundant as some people were "so brainwashed" they could not recognise they were in a cult.

She instead suggested greater education and awareness, and a reporting system.
Any laws targeting high-control institutions would be "really coming after the Christian churches", Ms Yuen said.

The inquiry's committee chair, Ella George, stressed there was no proposal to recommend legislation specifically targeting Christian churches or any faith-based groups."

" ... [A] powerful subgenre all about dangerous cults and extreme religions exists. While the idea of a cult may seem far-fetched or even unthinkable to some, cults actually do exist. In fact, they are not a thing of the past; cults exist even now.

NXIVM is a prime example—as recently as 2018, India Oxenberg was still engulfed in the Keith Raniere-led cult before getting out. And believe it or not, people are still members of NXIVM today."

"Taylor said the group [Zizians] believes in timeless decision theory, a Rationalist belief suggesting that human decisions and their effects are mathematically quantifiable.
The Zizians also apparently believe that because there are two hemispheres in the brain, individuals can split their consciousness between two personalities by waking one side at a time, Taylor said. She said veganism and animal rights are also central to the ideology. A bio for an Instagram account that appears to belong to Youngblut reads, 'talk to me about being vegan and ai alignment.'"

Judge denies reduced sentence for former NXIVM leader Clare Bronfman

NXIVM leader Clare Bronfman

New York, NY (WRGB) — A federal judge on Monday denied a motion from Clare Bronfman to have her sentence reduced. Bronfman is serving a six year, nine month sentence for her role in the NXIVM sex cult.

In 2019, Bronfman pleaded guilty to identity theft, and a conspiracy involving undocumented immigrants. The former NXIVM leader and Seagram's liquor heiress recruited individuals into groups associated with NXIVM, then fraudulently sought visas for them.

Bronfman sought to have her sentence reduced under Amendment 821 of the United States Sentencing Guidelines, arguing she "did not personally cause substantial financial hardship" as required by the guidelines. District Court Judge Nichoals Garaufis writes Bronfman cannot prove her qualifications under Amendment 821. Judge Garaufis adds that even if Bronfman were eligible for a reduced sentence, it would not be warranted.

NXIVM was founded in Albany in 1998 by Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman, operating as a self-improvement multi-level marketing scheme. The company was a front for criminal activity, including sex trafficking and various forms of fraud.

Raniere is serving a 120-year sentence for racketeering and sex crimes. Salzman was released from federal prison in 2023, spending time at a halfway house until April 2024.

A home once owned by NXIVM, referred to in court documents as "The Library," recently hit the market. Neighbors previously told CBS 6 about late night parties at the home, 8 Hale Drive in Halfmoon. Listed on Zillow.com, photos show the home is almost entirely gutted. Asking price is $148,000.
