A new book from journalist Leah Sottile explores the link between New Age spirituality and political extremism in our region and beyond.

"Leah Sottile didn't set out to write a book about political extremism. The longtime Pacific Northwest reporter has logged years exploring the Northwest's long history of right-wing militant movements. But when she started working on her new book, Blazing Eye Sees All: Love Has Won, False Prophets, and the Fever Dream of the American New Age, she was surprised to see major overlap between these spiritual belief systems and hate groups — especially in the West.

From Elizabeth Clare Prophet in Montana; to Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, the Yelm-based spiritual center started by JZ Knight, a Washington woman who claimed she could channel a time-traveling being named Ramtha; to notorious fascist William Pelley, Northwest communities and charismatic leaders figure heavily into the history Sottile maps out.

"I think it goes back to the way the West was colonized, and this perception that continues, in some ways, that this is wide open space where you can come and live out your utopian ideas," said Sottile of why the Northwest seems to attract a disproportionate share of New Age groups. The problem, she said, isn't so much individual beliefs: "There's no harm in my mind if you have crystals in your pocket or are engaging in a wellness retreat that is helpful to you." But when leaders claim to "have all the answers" or focus beliefs on hatred, "there is a real distinction."

This is what happened with Pelley. As Cascade PBS has reported before, he led a fascist group called the Silver Shirts and propagated antisemitic conspiracy theories. His campaign was headquartered in Seattle, and when he ran for president in 1935, Washington was the only state where his name appeared on the ballot."

Horrific accounts from survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI) have been shared in recent documentaries, books, and podcasts. Noting their implicit coercion and historic abuses, some have called for these types of youth residential programs to be abolished, citing the significant trauma carried by survivors.

This workshop provides a trauma-informed path forward in supporting and engaging survivors of the TTI. Attendees will learn about the historical concerns within the TTI, and be provided practical, innovative, and gentle ideas for how adults can provide empowering, healing spaces for youth and families in the wake of a TTI placement.

The 14 mayors in the Twente region have issued an urgent letter to the national government, calling for stricter regulations on cults. Among other things, they want cult leaders and abuse to be dealt with more firmly and are calling for the establishment of a new reporting center.

At present, there is a lack of coordination in addressing abuses within cults and following up on reports, the mayors stated. According to them, the Public Prosecution Service, inspectorates, and police operate too much in isolation due to the absence of a clear point of contact.

They also fear that, because of the lack of strict regulations, the Netherlands could become a safe haven for cults. Nearby countries such as France and the United Kingdom already have stricter laws in place, and Belgium is also working on such legislation, the officials noted.

Netherlands wants to punish silence on sex abuse in closed communities

August 28, 2020

AMSTERDAM, Aug 28 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – The Dutch government wants to prosecute members of private groups and communities who fail to report sexual abuse in their organizations, a move that comes after Jehovah’s Witnesses rejected demands to tackle the under-reporting of abuse.

A 2019 report commissioned by the government to investigate sexual abuse involving Jehovah’s Witnesses found few cases were being reported to police, but group leaders dismissed calls for change and said they were being discriminated against.

Minister for Legal Protection Sander Dekker said that had spurred him to analyze how a law that punished organizations for failing to report sexual abuse could be structured.

“This makes it clear to me that the leadership (of the Jehovah’s Witnesses community) does not see or does not want to see the gravity of the situation. The leadership is leaving vulnerable victims out in the cold,” he said in a letter to parliament published late on Thursday.

“Victims of sexual abuse in the Netherlands have the same right to access help, care and justice, regardless of which community they belong to,” he added, promising a progress update on the potential legislation later this year.

The 2019 report, carried out by the University of Utrecht, found that about 80% of the 751 members who came forward to speak with researchers had reported abuse to leaders within the community. Three quarters said the response was inadequate.

Only 28% of them made an official report to the police, the research found. Almost half of the cases involved incest.

In order to provide more urgent support to victims, Dekker said he had allocated government funding to the Reclaimed Voices foundation, a charity supporting sexually abused children within the Jehovah’s Witness community.

The government has also requested that support network Slachtofferhulp Nederland (Victim Support Netherlands) broadens its services to specifically help victims of sexual abuse from closed communities.

Iva Bicanic, director of the Dutch-based Centre for Sexual Violence, said establishing a reporting point within communities for victims to come forward was a good initiative, but was unlikely to have an immediate and far-reaching impact.

“It’s too simplistic to think that abuse within closed communities will immediately be reported,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“Much more is needed from within the community itself, it needs to agree to a whole new code of conduct.” (Reporting by Karolin Schaps, Editing by Helen Popper; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, that covers the lives of people around the world who struggle to live freely or fairly. Dutch Gov't Launches Hotline For Sexual Abuse In Jehovah's Witnesses

DUTCH GOV'T LAUNCHES HOTLINE FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

August 30, 2020

The government is expanding the 'Break the silence" hotline of Victim Support Netherlands so that there is a special hotline where victims of sexual abuse within the Jehovah's Witnesses can get the help they need, Minister Sander Dekker for Legal Protection announced. The Jehovah's Witnesses refused to set up its own, low-threshold internal hotline, so the Minister decided to do so himself.

"I expect every community or organization to do everything possible to combat sexual abuse and to help and support victims. That is not happening with the Jehovah's Witnesses and I find that extremely bad," Dekker said. "That is why we are reaching out now and victims from this community will soon be able to contact the 'Break the silence' hotline of Victims Support Netherlands. Victims are entitled to professional help and a listening ear, it cannot be that they run into a wall of reluctance."

The government agency for scientific research WODC investigated sexual abuse and the willingness to come forward in the Jehovah's Witnesses, following calls from Foundation Reclaimed Voices to do so, and concluded that there is evidence that coming forward is complicated by the closed nature of the community. The WODC said it was essential for a low-threshold hotline to be created, and the government is doing so now after repeated instructions to the board of the Jehovah's Witnesses to create such a hotline were ignored.

The government will also give Reclaimed Voices financial support so that they can continue to help the victims of sexual abuse in the Jehovah's Witnesses community.

Minister Dekker said that he will "look seriously" at introducing a legal obligation on organizations to report sexual abuse. "No organization can close its eyes to abuses in its own club. Victims of sexual abuse must be able to count on help in taking steps towards the police and aid agencies. You can not keep that secret," he said.

As increasing numbers of people born or raised in cultic groups or relationships have reached adulthood, the International Cultic Studies Association has developed a program that addresses their special needs.

People born or raised in cultic environments cannot look back to a "pre-cult" identity. Raised in fringe subcultures, they often have educational and other skill deficits that interfere with adjustment to mainstream culture. Having grown up under the influence of irrational belief systems, they struggle with issues of dependency, self-esteem, and social conflict, and often have to deal with the trauma of physical and/or sexual abuse. They have difficulty getting help because they tend to lack finances and be wary of other people, including helpers.

Sexual Abuse and Willingness to Report Sexual Abuse Within the Jehovah's Witness Community

Scientific Research and Documentation Center (WODC)

This study focuses on the influence that patterns, rules, customs and structures within the Jehovah's Witness community in the Netherlands have on the manner in which sexual abuse or alleged sexual abuse are dealt with as well as the willingness to report sexual abuse or alleged sexual abuse. One important conclusion of the study is that the manner in which the abuse is handled within the Jehovah's Witness community leaves victims or alleged victims of sexual abuse feeling insufficiently recognised and supported.

The study was commissioned by the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) of the Ministry of Justice and Security, which requested a study be conducted in response to a motion of the Netherlands House of Representatives submitted by Van Nispen et al. (Motion 31015 no. 154). This motion served as main impetus for the WODC and this research project.

The study examined reports on experiences of sexual abuse provided by Jehovah's Witnesses and ex-Jehovah's Witnesses via an electronic contact point. We also conducted ten in-depth interviews with victims and their families, friends, and acquaintances. Furthermore, the research team consulted with the board of the Jehovah's Witnesses in the Netherlands and a representative of the US-based Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, we inspected the files at a Kingdom Hall to assess how records are kept, and we conducted a meeting with the board of the Reclaimed Voices foundation, whose mission is to support the victims of sexual abuse among Jehovah's Witnesses. Finally, we examined previous domestic and international studies into sexual abuse within closed communities, including the Jehovah's Witness community.

"Last year, 103 worried phone calls arrived at SektesIGN, which belonged to the same organization as Meld Misdaad Anoniem. That is a lot more than the years before, when serious reports were made every year between the sixties and eighties.

A striking number of phone calls were about mindfulness and happiness courses, which eventually degenerated into sexual and / or financial abuse of the participants. This often concerns women around 30, says Karin Krijnen, spokesperson for the organization that has since disappeared.

The task of Sektes signal was to bring serious signals to the attention of the right authorities. The hotline ceased to exist on 1 January, because the House of Representatives decided a few years ago to stop the subsidy. There will be no successor."
