Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis: Reclaiming the Sacred through Beauty: A Webinar for Survivors and Those Who Care for Them

The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis recently announced an emotional and spiritually uplifting virtual webinar titled “Reclaiming the Sacred through Beauty.” Designed specifically for survivors of clergy abuse and those who support them, the event features a deeply personal presentation by Sr. Danielle Victoria, a founder of the Sisters of the Little Way of Beauty, Truth, and Goodness.

During the webinar, Sr. Danielle Victoria shares her profound personal journey of grief, shock, and anger after discovering that her trusted spiritual director had allegedly assaulted a member of her former religious community. She details how she leaned heavily into artistic expression to process this devastating betrayal. By channeling her trauma into creating physical pieces of art, she was able to navigate her darkest moments, eventually encountering a renewed sense of hope and spiritual clarity.

The Sisters of the Little Way are notably the first religious community in the Catholic Church explicitly dedicated to safeguarding the vulnerable, accompanying survivors of abuse, and educating the public about the toxic dynamics of abuse within religious contexts. The webinar aims to demonstrate how survivors can reclaim their faith and find healing through the transformative power of art and solidarity.

New Publications

EBSCO Research: My Father's Shadow: How Lyndon LaRouche—Cult Leader, Notorious Anti-Semite, and Aspiring Demagogue—Was Prosecuted and Convicted by the Author's Father. This reflective memoir and historical examination chronicles the life, rise, and eventual prosecution of Lyndon LaRouche, a fringe political figure who constructed an insular, ideologically radical movement characterized by antisemitic conspiracy theories and high-control tactics.

The narrative opens with personal encounters involving aggressive campus recruitment methods, unpacking how LaRouche operatives targeted impressionable college students through deceptive intellectual overtures, pamphleteering, and intense ideological pressure.

At the heart of the essay is the author's father, the federal prosecutor who led the extensive legal effort that ultimately brought LaRouche and his senior associates to justice for mail fraud and tax violations. The piece explores the intricate boundary between political extremism and criminal conspiracy, reflecting on the historical lessons of demagoguery and the enduring institutional defense of democratic legal norms.

Beyond journalistic deep dives, the list highlights personal survivor accounts that trace the difficult path of disillusionment, escape, and post-cult recovery. These narratives expose the lasting trauma of psychological manipulation while offering vital insight into human vulnerability, social obedience, and the mechanisms needed to reclaim personal autonomy.

Legislative & Legal

Mirage News: Family First: Is Victoria's Cult Crackdown Inquisition? The Family First Party has issued a strong warning against the Victorian government's proposed legislative crackdown on high-control groups and cults, arguing that the new measures could severely infringe upon religious freedoms. Following a report by the Legal and Social Issues Committee that included 39 recommendations, the state is exploring options to criminalize "group-based coercion."

Family First representative Jane Foreman has publicly criticized the committee’s deliberate refusal to explicitly define what constitutes a "cult." She argues that using subjective legal terms like "coercion" and "harm" without precise definitions effectively hands police and prosecutors the unchecked power to criminalize standard religious practices. Foreman expressed deep concern that authorities could misinterpret ordinary aspects of faith—such as discipleship, end-times teachings, or door-knocking—as manipulative or abusive behavior.

While Family First firmly states that genuine abuse and coercion must be prosecuted, the party insists that any new legislation must target proven, demonstrable criminal conduct rather than policing religious doctrine or the art of persuasion. Critics fear the Victorian inquiry could devolve into a modern-day inquisition, stripping away fundamental charity protections for small religious groups and punishing devout individuals simply for their deeply held theological beliefs.

Clergy Abuse

A devastating joint investigation by ProPublica and the Minnesota Star Tribune has exposed a deeply entrenched culture of child sexual abuse and systemic cover-ups within the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church (OALC). Through interviews with survivors and examinations of court records, the report reveals a horrifying, multi-generational pattern where abuse was routinely minimized, silenced, and swept under the rug due to the church’s strict internal doctrines.

At the core of the church’s handling of abuse is a deeply flawed application of forgiveness. Church leaders and families actively pressured victims to forgive their abusers rather than reporting the crimes to law enforcement. This "forgive and forget" theology effectively shielded predators from legal accountability and created a dangerous environment where sexual misconduct became normalized. Consequently, the investigation found a tragic cycle where several child victims, lacking professional intervention or therapy, later went on to repeat abusive behaviors against peers or younger relatives.

While some survivors have bravely left the insular community to seek professional counseling and break the generational cycle of trauma, the OALC’s leadership has largely dismissed the allegations. Church officials maintain that abuse is merely a societal issue, ignoring the structural spiritual abuse protecting predators within their congregations.
