Former child evangelical preacher turned actor Marjoe Gortner has passed away at the age of 82 from complications related to congestive heart failure in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Gortner gained national prominence in the late 1940s as a four-year-old revivalist preacher, delivering dramatic sermons and performing marriages under the strict direction of his parents on the Pentecostal circuit.
In the early 1970s, Gortner granted filmmakers candid access to his final revival tour, exposing the movement's manipulative tactics and financial motivations. The resulting 1972 feature "Marjoe" won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. After the documentary's success, Gortner transitioned to Hollywood, starring in feature films such as "Earthquake," "The Food of the Gods," and "Starcrash," and appearing on television in series like "Falcon Crest." His wife, Susan Magestro, survives him.
