The West Australian
Several Western Australian business leaders and high-ranking members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are facing a Supreme Court defamation lawsuit. The case was filed by Adam Chapman, a Quinns Rocks father who was excommunicated from the church following a dispute over a complaint he lodged three years ago. The exact nature of his original complaint currently remains under a suppression order.
The defendants named in the lawsuit include prominent figures such as Peter Meurs, a wealthy former executive director at Fortescue Metals and one of the most influential Mormons globally. Other defendants include Geoffrey Andrew Grant, the chief people officer at WA's Department of Transport, and Justin Richard, the CEO of Oar Resources. Rounding out the list are business owner Brent Arthur Kimpton and church bishop David Frost.
Chapman alleges that these individuals made multiple disparaging remarks about him following his fallout with the church. In response, the five defendants have formally applied to strike out Chapman’s statement of claim. While the church has publicly dismissed the defamation claims as "meritless," the matter is considered sensitive enough that American observers have been dispatched to monitor the legal proceedings.
