Participants Needed
Were you once a member of a cult?
Did you experience conversion therapy to change your sexual orientation while in the cult?
If you have answered ’yes’ to the above questions, you are being invited to take part in the University of Salford research project focusing on the lived experience of former cultic group members who also engaged in conversion therapy.
This research is important in gaining a more thorough understanding about the experiences of conversion therapy.
Conversion therapy is commonly defined as ‘any attempt to change sexual orientation, gender
identity or expression, and is sometimes called reparative therapy, reorientation therapy, sexual
orientation change efforts or gender identity change efforts’ (Pérez-Sales, 2020).
This research will involve an interview about your conversion therapy experience with the lead
researcher Mariya Afanaseva, a masters student at the University of Salford, under the supervision of Jill Aebi-Mytton. The interview will be approximately one hour, and will take place online.
