THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Karunagappally police have registered a case against a few Facebook users for allegedly posting and sharing defamatory materials against Mata Amritanandamayi. The police, however, clarified that they are not going after every user who 'liked' the posts, but, will focus on tracing the origin of certain pages with derogatory content against Mata Amritanandamayi.
A hate campaign was launched against Amritanandamayi on Facebook and other social networking sites following the release of a controversial book, 'Holy Hell: A Memoir of Faith, Devotion, and Pure Madness', by a former disciple Gail Tredwel a few days ago.
The case was registered based on a complaint filed before the Kollam city
police commissioner by five devotees of Mata
Amritanandamayi -- Baiju P, Rahul
S, Ramesh, Akshay Jayakumar and Sanoop. The five are staff and inmates of the
Mata Amritanandamayi ashram at Vallikavu near Karunagappally in Kollam
district. In the absence of the commissioner, city special branch assistant
commissioner received the complaint and he in turn handed it over to the
Karunagappally police.
"We have registered a case in this regard. Action will be taken against those who posted the malicious comments and not against everybody," said Karunagappally assistant commissioner of police Jayashanker.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Mata Amritanandamayi Math said the devotees filed the complaint with the knowledge of the math. The math suspects that various organizations and a section of media are involved in a conspiracy to bring disgrace to the sanctity of Amritanandamayi and her math.
