Alex Gibney's documentary Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief drew 88,000 viewers on British pay TV giant Sky's Sky Atlantic on Monday night, according to overnight ratings data.

Consolidated figures for seven days of viewing are expected to be higher given that much of the viewing for Sky Atlantic content comes in DVR and on-demand form.‎ Also, the 9 p.m. time slot has popular dramas on other networks, and the doc aired in the 9 p.m. to 11:25 p.m. slot. Overall, Sky Atlantic's consolidated figures often double its overnight results.

The overnight audience figure was up from the 34,000 viewers that watched the channel's last documentary on the FDNY in early August, according to Broadcast magazine. It said the slot in which it aired has, on average, reached 147,000 viewers for the network over the past 12 months.

Sky originally planned to air the doc in Britain in April, but put those plans on ice because Northern Ireland is not subject to the 2013 Defamation Act, which U.K. observers said could expose the company to libel claims there. The doc, which has already been screening in British theaters, was recently given its air date across the U.K., including Northern Ireland, and Ireland.

Scientology has called the doc "biased, one-sided" and said it contains "numerous inaccuracies."

Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright, Going Clear was produced by Jigsaw Productions for Sky Atlantic.
