Hybrid book talk about Luke Wilson's new bookBurlington, VT, June 16, 2026

This edited collection brings together the experiences of those subjected to queer conversion therapy. It aims to expose conversion practices for what they are - pseudoscientific, bogus, ineffective, and wildly traumatic - and to recognise and listen to survivors. With contributions from Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke, and many more from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, this is an attempt to ensure that what happened within these pages cannot and will not happen to future generations.

Research & Academic

Research ProjectHave you ever experienced mandated shunning, enforced exclusion, or social isolation imposed by a religious community?
The University of Roehampton is conducting an important Research Project into the psychological and social impact of religious ostracism and enforced disconnection.

This includes people affected by environments such as:
  • Exclusive Brethren
  • Scientology
  • Haredi Judaism
  • Amish communities
  • Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • Mennonite communities
  • Islam
  • Baháʼí Faith
  • TM Communities
  • and similar high-control religious groups
If you were ever pressured, instructed, or required to cut ties with family members, friends, or former believers — or if this happened to you — your voice matters.

Because every serious scientific study also needs a comparison group, people WITHOUT any experience of religious shunning are equally welcome to participate.

Ongoing Focus/News

"...There are conflicting reports about how and why John Lennon soured on the Maharishi. The arrival of his friend Alexis Madras in India seems to have been a catalyst. Reports suggest that “Magic Alex,” as he was informally known, didn’t like the influence that the “Giggling Guru” was exerting.

At some point, John Lennon lost the awe factor when it came to the Maharishi. He didn’t like reports (which may or may not have been circulated by Madras) that the older man had been getting too familiar with some of the female guests at the retreat.

Lennon soon decided that it was time to leave this idyll behind. (The fact that he had recently struck up his relationship with Yoko Ono and wanted to get back to her could have had something to do with his impatience.) He grew frustrated with how long it was taking for a cab to come and drive him to the airport in Delhi.
While he was waiting for this transport, he wrote a song detailing what he really thought of his host. He titled it “Maharishi”. And the lyrics weren’t exactly laudatory: 'What have you done/You made a fool of everyone.'"
