Minor girl rescued from tantric cult sacrifice

Nepal Police, with the help of some rights organisations in India, rescued a 16-year-old girl from the hands of human traffickers. She was allegedly being sold in a bid to sacrifice her life as per some tantric religious practice.

Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau of Nepal Police said their preliminary investigation into many details wherein the girl was chosen and trafficked, revealed that she was most probably taken to India for sacrifice on the full moon day.

The girl, who came from an underprivileged family of Dhading district, was rescued from Ranhola street No 2 of New Delhi on January 31. She was then flown to Nepal the following day and kept in a house in Kathmandu. Police said the traffickers had searched for a girl with specific features in accordance with the ritual human sacrifices that often happens in India.According to Senior Superintendent of Police Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, head of the AHTB, traffickers often seek girls meeting certain criteria to be sold to people involved in tantric cults. "The girls need to have fair skin type and slender body without any blemishes or scars on the body. They also mostly search for innocent girls before the onset of their menstruation cycle," Shrestha said. He further said these were the classic features that dark religious sects searched for in the girls meant for sacrifice in the cult's religious ceremonies.Multiple media outlets in India, citing data of the National Crime Records Bureau, have reported that over 100 human sacrifices have been conducted from 2014 to 2021.Police have arrested six people in connection with the trafficking of the Nepali girl who had gone missing from her house since 3 December 2022.One of the traffickers was a woman who was with the girl from the very beginning. This woman would check all the body parts of the victim multiple times to check if there was any scar or tattoo imprinted on her skin. The traffickers had lured the girl saying that she would only have to appease the baba and in exchange she would get plenty of riches. She had no clue about their evil intention.Upon finding that she fulfilled the criteria, the girl was taken to various tantric babas where she had to stay for some days to prove she was fit for the ritual for over two months."The girl was taken to three tantric babas before she being delivered to the main tantric who would most probably kill her in the name of god or black magic," Shrestha said. He further said three other Nepali girls were rejected by those babas earlier.The girl, who had seen all the suffering due to poverty and lack of parental love, had agreed to go with the traffickers hoping to make a quick buck. "Only after being rescued did she know from us that she was a potential victim for the sacrifice, which turned her black and blue all of a sudden," said DSP Dan Bahadur Malla, the Bureau's spokesperson.During the two months of trafficking, the girl suffered sexual harassment as the traffickers and tantric babas would strip her of clothes seeking scars on her body.Her rescue was possible after her maternal grandparents filed a case with the police around two months later. The AHTB soon contacted an organisation called 'Kin India' which helped the police trace the girl. All the traffickers are now in police custody.

CNN: YouTube shuts down prominent Nigerian megachurch preacher's channel for 'gay curing' claims

"A popular Nigerian televangelist has urged his followers to "pray for YouTube" for shutting down his account after he posted videos on his channel claiming to 'cure' gay members of his congregation of their sexuality.

"I got to know what happened to YouTube when I saw the viewers complaining... I want you to help me pray for YouTube... Don't see them the other way around; see them as friends. We need to be strong," T.B. Joshua said in a sermon posted on the ministry's Facebook page at the weekend.

The YouTube channel of The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) -- run by Joshua -- was deactivated last week and can no longer be viewed by its nearly two million subscribers.

OpenDemocracy, a media rights group based in the UK, told CNN that it sent a message to YouTube on April 8 asking if the conversion therapy videos did not violate its policies.

"We noticed at least seven videos. In one video, T.B. Joshua slapped a woman and her partner whom he called her 'second' (partner) at least 16 times," said Lydia Namubiru, OpenDemocracy's Africa Editor.

"He said he was casting the 'spirit of woman' out of her," Namubiru said as she narrated the content of the footage flagged to YouTube and Facebook by her organization. The woman later told Joshua that she no longer felt affection for her partner because of his intervention, Namubiru said."

CNN: UK regulator sanctions Nigerian Christian channel over 5G conspiracy theory claims

"British media regulator Ofcom has imposed sanctions against a channel founded by Nigerian megachurch preacher Chris Oyakhilome for airing "unsubstantiated claims" linking 5G to the coronavirus pandemic.

The regulator said while it does not oppose broadcasts airing controversial views or those challenging health authorities, the claims in a sermon aired by Christian channel Loveworld News calling the pandemic a "global cover-up" posed serious health consequences to viewers.

The sermon questioned the need for lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the virus without providing context, according to the Ofcom investigation."

NITHYANANDA Stripped Of His Halo A hidden video camera exposed the ‘swamiji’ as a sexual pervert. The godman has since been trying to fend off a flurry of charges against him. 

Say “Sex and the Swamiji” in Tamil Nadu and the first name that pops up is that of Nithyananda. A video footage of Nithi (nickname given by the Tamil media) gallivanting on the bed with a Tamil actress continues to be one of the most watched footages on YouTube even six years after it was first aired on television.

This tall, dusky young man—originally A. Rajasekharan, from the pilgrim town of Thiruvannamalai—could spellbind audiences with his fluent oratory on Hindu spirituality. It stayed, till he got undone by a hidden video camera. That plot by two of his own disillusioned followers stripped him of his halo and exposed him as a sexual pervert.

There were others too fed up with Nithyananda’s wayward and pretentious ways. Like, a mechanical engineer who used to work in the US and surrendered at the feet of Nithyananda in search of spiritual awakening. Now 42, she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by the swami. The godman brainwashed her into believing that she was only doing “guru seva” by subjecting herself to his carnal pleasures.

“He would sweet-talk me into submitting myself to him, saying that he was like Shiva and I his Parvati and that our union would do the world a lot of good,” recalls the victim. “If he could do this to an educated woman who has seen the outside world, imagine the way he would have exploi­ted others.” In her deposition to the Karnataka police, the woman lists exact dates and places from 2005 to 2009 when Nithyananda compelled her to have sex with him.

Nithyananda allegedly forced a devotee to abort after she had become pregnant from her husband, saying motherhood would check her ‘enlightenment’.

Getting whiff of the video recording with the actress, Nithyananda, in 2009, had the other victim and rest of the ashram inmates to sign pre-dated non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) under which the disciples are expected to have tantric sex. Page ten of the NDA states that as part of the “Learning from the Masterprogram volunteer understands that the Program may involve the learning and practice of ancient tantric secrets associated with male and female ecstasy, including the use of sexual energy for increased intimacy/spiritual conne­ction, pleasure, harmony, and freedom”. It further states these activities “could be physically and mentally challenging, and may involve nudity, access to visual images...and descriptions of nudity and sexual activity, close physical proximity and intimacy, verbal and written descriptions and audio sounds of a sexually oriented, and erotic nature, etc.”

The disciple also gets to absolve the teacher or the ashram of any wrongdoing they may be accused of with the following clause in the NDA: “By reading and signing this addendum, Volunteer irrevocably acknowledges that he/she is voluntarily giving his (sic) unconditional acceptance of such activities and discharges the Leader (Nithyananda) and the Foundation, and anyone else not specifically mentioned here but directly or indirectly involved in the organisation, management, or conduct of any such programs from any liability, direct or indirect, arising from such activities.”

“None of us was given an opportunity to read through the agreement,” recalls the engineer woman. Her deposition as a witness adds meat to the chargesheet based on the compla­int by K. Lenin, a key disciple of Nithi, who sent the video recording to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police (and also the media) with a complaint on how the swami had misused his image and the ashram’s reach to cheat people in the name of religion.

“Though the chargesheet based on my complaint was filed in November 2010, Nithyananda used every trick to delay the trial,” notes Lenin. Eventually, following a Supreme Court dir­ective, Nithi underwent a test. A Bangalore hospital certified that he was not impotent and mentioned in its report that he did not cooperate when more tests were required, he adds.

Similarly, his voice sample was given only after the SC’s inter­vention and it was found to be “matching” with the phone conversation the godman had with Lenin. “In that phone call, he had pleaded with me to withdraw the complaint and had even justified his sexual escapades saying that late spiritualists like Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Aurobindo and even Ramanar had female companions. The final chargesheet filed in 2015 said the two voices were a match. The trial has not progressed beyond the initial stages,” says Lenin.

To stop Lenin and the engineer woman from pursuing their cases, Nithi and his cohorts have filed at least 18 false cases against them across India and seven lawsuits in the US. They are forced to hop from court to court, seeking bail. Even as the rape and abduction case against him was pending in Karna­taka, Nithyananda got himself appointed as 293rd pontiff of the Madurai Adheenam, a 1,500-year-old math, in April 2012. After protests from the public and the state’s own HR and CE department, he was removed from the post after five months.

Today, Nithyananda’s devotees and math disciples face resistance in various parts of Tamil Nadu whenever they try to expand their activities there. “He expects Hindu outfits and other Hindu religious leaders to rally behind him, forgetting that he had single-handedly brought disrepute to our religion,” points out a leader of the Hindu Munnani.
