The City of Montreal is growing impatient with the Church of Scientology.

Radio Canada reports this morning that the city is threatening to seize the church's downtown property for back taxes.

The Scientologists owe nearly $90,000 on a building on Saint Catherine Street in the Quartier des Spectacles. The building is unoccupied and the church's plans to renovate it have stalled.

Because it is not being used, it is not eligible for the tax exemption for places of worship.

Last week, Montreal sent a notice that the property will be auctioned in November unless the account is brought up to date. Radio Canada says the church responded with a partial payment of $14,000.
