Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise has long been one of the most high-profile advocates for the controversial Church of Scientology.

Since its inception in 1954, the religion has been involved in a number of controversies and rumours.

And now fans of Cruise have now seized upon reports the actor is moving into Scientology’s spiritual headquarters – the former home of the religion’s founder L Ron Hubbard – in East Grinstead, Sussex.

Reportedly, the actor wants to make the religious base a major landmark in Europe and has poured millions into developing the property.

The reports come shortly after news he had put the £5million mansion he bought with ex-wife Katie Holmes up for sale in nearby East Grinstead.

Aerial shots taken of Saint Hill Manor show the Mission Impossible star’s latest renovations to the vast 100-acre estate.

And planning application documents reveal the extension will include a spa and gym as well as a high-end restaurant.

“Tom is relocating to England and uses the Scientology manor as his base,” a source told the Daily Mail Online.

“It’s the highest recognition to live where L Ron Hubbard did, and [David] Miscavige [the church’s leader] clearly believes giving Tom this access will keep his faith in the church for decades to come.

“It’s worked a charm because Tom’s more dedicated to Scientology than ever before. He’s investing a lot of his own money back into the UK church, and secretly the talk is how they want to be as influential as the royal family.”

"He [Tom] reminded me of the character Ben Stiller plays in the film Dodgeball. Very pristine, very intense, everything from the way he dressed, talked and walked was immaculate."

Phil Major

During building work carried out last year, the organisation had to use East Grinstead Rugby Club’s property to park their trucks and vehicles.

In return for helping the church, club director Phil Major was personally invited onto the property by church leader Miscavige and Cruise to attend their annual gala, held last October.

Major told the Mail Online: “They came over and asked to use our car park during the weekdays and they filled our entire place with contractors, you wouldn't have been able to park if you came here last September.”

Phil went on to reveal details about his time spent inside the headquarters of the infamously secretive religion.

He said: "In the conference they kept being critical about psychologists, it was very anti-drugs, anti-medicine.

"There was bottomless champagne. I was introduced to Tom, he made a lot of effort and we spoke about sports for the most of it.

"He reminded me of the character Ben Stiller plays in the film Dodgeball. Very pristine, very intense, everything from the way he dressed, talked and walked was immaculate."

It emerged Miscavige spent time in East Grinstead in his early teens and attended a local school where a local member of the council, Bob Mainstone, was a teacher.

Speaking about their reunion at the Scientology event Mr Mainstone told the Daily Mail: “He's still a live wire and is always pleased to see me.”
