MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE
Directed by John Dower
Not your typical exposé. BBC doc-maker and journalist Louis Theroux teams up with director John Dower and producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugarman) to explore the self-mythologizing Church of Scientology. In order to better understand the human impulses behind the infamously guarded Church, Theroux recruits Marty Rathbun, a former high-ranking Scientologist as his chief collaborator, and together they cast and re-stage alleged events and Church practices on Hollywood sound stages. Adding a bizarre meta-layer to the story, it’s quickly revealed that Theroux is in turn being filmed by those he is surveilling.
Through the process of re-interpreting Rathbun’s history with the Church, Theroux cleverly raises questions of culpability and condemnation, leaving no subject—himself included—unscathed. A meticulously calibrated combination of re-enactments and probing confrontations with current and former Scientologists, all overlaid with Theroux’s deadpan wit, My Scientology Movie is an irreverent comedy that is as outlandish as it is revealing.
