Accused Sarah Lawrence sex cult leader Lawrence Ray wants to be released from federal lockup amid the coronavirus outbreak — claiming he has health issues that caused him to recently pass out in his cell, according to court papers filed Monday.
Ray, who is awaiting trial for sex-trafficking and other crimes, requested he be let out of the Metropolitan Correctional Center on bail — or be given another bail hearing — in a letter written by his lawyer to Manhattan federal court Judge Lewis Liman.
In the appeal, Ray’s attorney says he’s been denied his constitutional right to meet with his lawyer since the MCC has been locked down because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Ray, who says he’s diabetic, is also at risk of serious illness if he catches coronavrius in the Lower Manhattan prison, his lawyer wrote in the letter.
At the end of March, Ray told his father that he passed out in his cell at the prison after “experiencing head pain,” according to the letter.
After he passed out, a doctor determined his glucose levels were high because of his diabetes, according to his lawyer.
The incident “signifies Mr. Ray’s higher risk for hospitalization if he contracts COVID-19,” according to his lawyer.
He’s requesting to be let out on $100,000 bail and confined to his father’s home on Staten Island.
The 60-year-old former friend of disgraced NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik allegedly created a Nxivm-like sex cult to prey on his daughter’s classmates at Sarah Lawrence College — all while allegedly raking in nearly $2 million in just two years by forcing one into prostitution.
He was ordered held without bail at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on March 2.
