CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS: The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM)

The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM)
CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS:  The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM)

Special Issue:  Sexuality, Sexual Abuse, and LGBTQ+ Issues within Cults, Coercive Control Environments, and Religious Institutions.

Guest Editor:  Dr. Doni Whitsett, whitsett@usc.edu

In conjunction with The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM) editorial review board, the special issue guest editor issues a call for full-length manuscripts emphasizing “Sexuality and Sexual Abuse within Cults, Coercive Control Environments, and Religious Institutions.”

The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM) is the peer-reviewed, flagship journal of the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA). The purpose of the journal is to publish rigorous scholarly work focusing on abuse, coercive control, and manipulation in organizations, environments, and relationships. The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (IJCAM) encourages, supports, and reports on the work of researchers, mental health professionals, and social scientists who have studied the common sociological and/or psychological dynamics underlying different forms of coercion, abuse, and manipulation across diverse contexts.

In conjunction with the IJCAM editorial review board, the guest editors issue a call for manuscripts emphasizing sexuality and sexual abuse within cults, coercive control environments, and religious institutions.

Historically, sexuality, sexual/affectional orientation, and gender identity have been used as a means of control and manipulation within abusive and coercive environments and relationships. The control may take various forms, from pressure to engage in sex on the one hand to prohibition against any sexual contact before marriage, pressure to have many children, and pressure to abort a fetus. Controlled environments may prescribe specific sexual practices and prohibit others such as  one’s choice of a sexual partner.

Sexually controlled environments may also put members at risk for sexual abuse; these can lead to the distortion of healthy sexuality, accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt, and a variety of depressive and anxiety disorders. Recovery from these groups can be complex, requiring a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics that contribute to the symptoms.

The editors are soliciting full length manuscripts that discuss these issues as well as providing solutions to improve the sexual, mental, physical, and spiritual health of those who have experienced sexual control and sexual abuse in coercive control environments and relationships.

Example topics include:

>Purity Culture and its effects on sexuality in relationships

>Patriarchy and effects on sexuality

>Sexuality used as a recruiting tool for cults

>Sexual abuse by pastors, preachers, church leaders

>Sexual control in specific cultic or coercive/high demand groups

>Sexual control in one-on-one intimate relationship

>Reproductive coercion and birth control

>Sexual Consent in cultic or coercive and high demand/control groups

>Sexual/Affectional orientation in a cultic or coercive high control group

>Gender identity control in a coercive group

>Other topics as relevant

Authors should follow the ICSA Author Guidelines:  https://www.ijcam.org/author-guidelines

Submit manuscripts to ijcaminfo@gmail.com. Authors should note that their submission is for this special issue. Manuscripts are accepted in English, French, and Spanish.

Each manuscript will go through a blind review process.

Special Issue Proposed Timeline

CultNEWS101 Articles: 10/18/2021 (Colonia Dignidad, Chile, Documentary, NXIVM, LuLaRoe, R. Kelly, LDS, Podcast, ICSA, Call For Papers)

Colonia Dignidad, Chile, Documentary, NXIVM, LuLaRoe, R. Kelly, LDS, Podcast, ICSA, Call For Papers

"A Sinister Sect: Colonia Dignidad is a true-crime documentary series that was released on Netflix on October 1, 2021. The series is based on the isolated colony established in Chile lead by German fugitive Paul Schäfer during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile in the 1970s."
"After escaping and blowing the whistle on NXIVM, married couple Sarah Edmondson and Anthony "Nippy" Ames are channeling their lessons learned into the Acast podcast, A Little Bit Culty, which explores abuses of power and cult-like practices through conversations with people who have experienced it firsthand. Ahead of its return with season 2, ET has an exclusive preview of the all-new episodes, which includes guests, like former LuLaRoe retailer Roberta Blevins, who shared her story in the Amazon docuseries LuLaRich; Stolen author Elizabeth Gilpin and more.

When it comes to speaking to Blevins, Edmondson reveals the two shared a laugh over their similar experiences. 'You know, the patterns are so obvious now. Like, even just the similarities between the sociopathic behavior of both of our respective leaders and the names of the different ranks that you have to climb," she says, adding they were able to "find the humor in this dark content.'

"It all started with a pair of leggings.

"LuLaRich," the limited docuseries on Amazon Prime, shines a terrifying and borderline satirical light on the world of multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes. It exposes LuLaRoe, a massive clothing retailer that mysteriously amassed over $3 billion in profits in 2016, just one year after the company was founded.

The four-part series follows LuLaRoe co-founders Deanna Brady and her husband Mark Stidham, and it features exclusive interviews from several former LuLaRoe consultants who lost everything by falling prey to the enticing promises of getting rich quickly.

LuLaRoe's legality and existence are muddy in the eyes of the law, as the retailer is classified as a "multi-level marketing company," which are currently legal in all 50 states.

Bryan Hochstein, an assistant professor of marketing at The University of Alabama, said that being a multi-level marketing company isn't always a bad thing."

ICSA International Conference - Call for Papers - Montreal, Canada

Call for Papers—ICSA International Conference

Submission Deadline: October 31, 2019.

Intervening in Cultic Situations—Questions and Issues
Montreal, Canada
July 2–4, 2020
Preconference Workshops: July 1, 2020

The International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA) is conducting its 2020 Annual International Conference jointly with Info-Secte/Info-Cult of Montreal and the Association québécoise Plaidoyer-Victimes.

Montreal's International Jazz and Fireworks festivals will be happening during the conference.

The conference theme:
"Intervening in Cultic Situations: Questions and Issues," relates to the many requests for help and to the support services offered to those harmed by cultic situations (members or former members of high-control groups, and friends and families). Service providers include various organizations (community groups, foundations, judiciary, police agencies, youth-protection services, professionals from different disciplines, etc.). ICSA welcomes proposals related to this theme.

Paper presentations, workshops, and panels will provide an opportunity to discuss the different forms of assistance offered, how these forms of assistance came about, and also to reflect on new interventions. The conference will also provide a unique opportunity to examine legal guidelines (such as the various Charters of Rights and Freedoms, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Criminal Code, etc.) and how these guidelines might frame responses to different requests for help. Finally, the conference will enable professionals and researchers to reflect on the language used to describe the various phenomena: religion, cult, contemporary beliefs, cultic groups, new religious movements, minority religious groups, and so on in order to better understand how the use of certain terms can affect requests for help.

The conference committee is especially interested in proposals related to the conference theme. However, the committee will consider proposals on all aspects of the cult phenomenon, including victims' perspectives, psychological and social manipulation, religious fanaticism, terrorism, law enforcement, treatment, prevention, and legal, social, and public-policy aspects of manipulation and victimization.

The Conference Committee will consider proposals in English or French.

This annual conference addresses the needs and interests of its audience, which generally consists of four principal constituencies: former group members, families, helping professionals, and researchers.

ICSA is firmly committed to freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and freedom of religion. Consistent with these values, ICSA's policy with regard to conferences has been to encourage a wide range of viewpoints. Opinions expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of ICSA's directors, staff, or supporters, or of collaborating organizations.

Individual presenters will have 30 minutes for a paper, including a question-and-answer period. Panel organizers will have 90 minutes for the panel, including a question-and-answer period. It is recommended that no more than three people speak on a panel.

CALL FOR POSTERS - ICSA 2018 Annual Conference, Philadelphia

The International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA) is conducting its 2018 Annual International Conference with Info-Secte/Info-Cult of Montreal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 5-7, 2018 (preconference workshops on Wednesday July 4th). The conference theme is the global challenge of young people born, raised or recruited into extremist groups, abusive religious organizations, or coercive/exploitative relationships. The conference committee is especially interested in considering poster sessions from students.

Please submit your research, including research in progress, and be part of a growing and exciting international community of researchers in the field of cultic studies, religious studies, and sectarianism, undue influence, and new religious movements.

Your poster can focus on one or more of the many areas in this diverse and emerging field including, but not limited to:

  • social psychology or sociology of influence
  • study of harm or treatment of victims
  • history, anthropology, and culture of cults or sects
  • demographic studies on the prevalence of new religious or other movements
  • policy and political science of cultic groups
  • individual subjectivity, agency, and creativity in cultural groups
  • Boundaries between the individual and society in group and other contexts.

Your proposal should consist of an abstract of 300 words or less. We also welcome group research project submissions. We also need a short biographical sketch. If you already have one on our people profile page, let us know if it is okay or needs changing. If we do not have a bio, please send one. Send your proposal to mail@icsamail.com.

In a poster session, one explains one’s paper on a poster placed on an easel or a table or a wall. Typically, the poster presenters will pin or tape pages (e.g., an abstract with a large font) from their paper. You should also have either copies of your paper to hand out or a business card attendees can use to e-mail a request that you send them a copy of your paper. Attendees pass through the poster area, examining the posters and speaking with authors individually. In a poster presentation, one does not formally present to a group; however, one has an opportunity for quality interactions and followup with those who are most interested in your work. ICSA will contact poster presenters about logistical details as the conference draws near.

ICSA is NOT accepting proposals for speaking, only for posters. The deadline for speaking proposals is long past.

Deadline for abstracts and bio information: May 1, 2018

Though the deadline for submitting a proposal to speak at the 2017 ICSA annual conference is long past, ICSA will continue to consider poster proposals until the deadline of May 1, 2017.

In a poster session, one explains one’s paper on a poster placed on an easel or a table or a wall. Typically, the poster presenters will pin or tape pages (e.g., an abstract with a large font) from their paper. You should also have either copies of your paper to hand out or a business card. Attendees pass through the poster area, examining the posters and speaking with authors individually. In a poster presentation, one does not formally present to a group; however, one has an opportunity for quality interactions and followup with those who are most interested in your work. ICSA will contact poster presenters about logistical details as the conference draws near.

To submit a poster, read the instructions here: http://www.icsahome.com/events/callforposters

The instructions include a link to an online form. Posters will only be considered that are submitted via that form.
