Aussie school blocks religious group that claims to free children from autism-causing demons

The Queensland Department of Education has spoken out after a controversial religious group that says it can "free" people of autism, cancer and homosexuality promoted an indoctrination event at a Brisbane school.

The Last Reformation (TLR), an evangelical Christian church founded by Danish baker-turned-pastor Torben Sondergaard, angered locals by announcing it would hold a "Kickstart" at a public high school next month.

"Am I reading this right: a religious group that performs child exorcism is travelling to Australia and has been allowed to use Cavendish Road State High School to recruit followers?" a concerned resident asked online, sparking a firestorm of complaints from community members.

Autism and exorcism

TLR, has been described in previous reports as a "cult" — although the group rejects this label — has made headlines over the years following concerns that their teachings and practices were sending "dangerous" messages about conditions such as autism.

In an interview with Spain's The Local in 2016, Mr Sondergaard clarified he does not claim to "heal" autism but instead, "frees" people of the "demons" that cause it.

"It happened in Australia to a nine-year-old-girl who suffered autism. She was freed from demons and she was happy," Mr Sondergaard said. "It wasn't something shocking like a big man holding her down. She was with her mother and we all prayed and the demon was cast out and she was happy and the mother was happy."

The claim prompted autism advocacy groups to slam Mr Sondergaard and TLR for "targeting vulnerable people" by saying those with autism have demons inside them.

The group announced a series of training events — or "Kickstarts" — in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide this September. These events are meetings where "people learn about what the gospel is and how to share it, how to obey Jesus when it comes to healing the sick and casting out demons, and how to be led by the Holy Spirit," Mr Sondergaard explained in his book Kickstart Package.

Mr Sondergaard is currently in detention in the US after he was arrested in July 2022 for alleged gun smuggling – an accusation that TLR vehemently denies.

Department of Education responds

A spokesperson from the Department of Education addressed concerns about TLR booking Cavendish Road State High School in a statement to Yahoo News, denying that permission to use the venue was ever granted to the group.

"Cavendish Road State High School received a request to hire the school hall from the faith group The Last Reformation for an upcoming event. This request was not accepted by the school prior to the event being publicly advertised by the group," the spokesperson said.

"The school will not be facilitating the event on school grounds and have advised the organisers to make alternate arrangements and amend promotional materials on the event location," the spokesperson added.

Events cancelled

After the Department of Education addressed TLR's request, the group announced a change of venue and has since cancelled all forthcoming events in Australia, citing "attacks and persecution".

An update on TLR's Eventbrite page states that the events couldn't go ahead as one of the church's preachers, Jón Bjarnastein, was denied a visa to enter the country, and two venues "cancelled" bookings.

"False complaints and accusations were received, mentioning that we were dangerous and that we are dangerous to children; and because of these allegations and complaints, the venue was cancelled. After this, other allegations were made that TLR is a cult and allegations of child exorcisms," TLR's statement reads.

"So from all of this, it's very clear that there are people working behind the scenes; and they seem to be working very hard to prevent us from continuing. As a result we have made the decision to cancel the upcoming Kickstarts in Australia."

The Australian branch of TLR did not directly address Yahoo's questions about its practices, instead pointing to its website for further information.

ICSA Annual Conference: 'Only normal people join cults': Representing and supporting the multiply marginalized and neurominority cult experience

Priscilla Eyles

4:00 PM-4:50 PM

My eight-year experience in two cults, has led me to strongly believe that many  marginalised, neurominorities like myself (a racialised, queer womxn with Autism, ADHD and co-morbid mental health issues) can be more vulnerable to getting enmeshed into cults. This is due to key impairments in our conditions and the lived experience of trauma (such as racialised trauma or 'minority stress') which makes thought reform methods more impactful and concerningly more mentally damaging (and even fatal) long-term.

However, after consuming much cult-survivor/cult-recovery information, media and books, I realised that my perspective and my experience weren't being adequately represented. In fact many cult awareness experts instead insisted on the ‘normality’, ‘intelligence’ and often ‘high social status’ of those recruited into cults. Biased I believe, by their efforts to destigmatise what is often a shameful topic for cult survivors and by gaps in their knowledge and own lived experiences.

In my presentation, I will unpack prevalent misconceptions about the 'normality' of people involved in cults. I will argue for the importance of platforming diverse stories and to having an understanding specifically of the compounded impact of being multiply oppressed and neurodivergent (with a focus on ADHD/ASD) on the cult experience, based on my own observations of being in two cults. I will also look at why we urgently need to adopt more inclusive and intersectional approaches in order to reach vulnerable communities and people like me before cults reach them.

Priscilla (she/they) is passionate about raising awareness of the many barriers Neurodivergent and Disabled people with multiply-marginalised and racialised identities face, alongside destigmatising the conversation around cultic abuse as an advocate, speaker and writer. As a bi-racialised, neurodivergent and queer person that has faced many social barriers themselves and survived eight years of being in two cults (Landmark Worldwide and One Taste), they also see the great importance of seeing yourself represented and included in cult survivor advocacy, research and outreach work. Jehovah's Witnesses, Autism, Sonnenkrieg Division (SKD), Cult Recovery and Support Webinar Expanded

"In case you're wondering how some religions are coping with the outbreak of COVID-19, just look to the Jehovah's Witnesses to see how absurd reactions can get.

In a recent video featuring Governing Body member Stephen Lett, he absolutely delights in the disease because he sees it as a signal that Armageddon is imminent."
" ... Autism comes with anxiety about social interactions. If you struggle to read facial expressions or understand sarcasm, then you take comfort in timetables and calendars, which are fixed and reliable.

Barry Prizant, a Brown University autism expert with whom I coauthored a book , likes to recount the story of a mom who couldn't figure out why her young autistic son became agitated — inconsolable, even —  around the same time every autumn. Then she realized the source of the problem: the switch from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time, when suddenly it was dark at dinnertime. From the little boy's perspective, the world had changed without anyone warning him."

Counter Extremism Project: Banned Neo-Nazi Group Sonnenkrieg Division Launches Telegram Channel
"The British neo-Nazi group the Sonnenkrieg Division (SKD) allegedly created a Telegram channel on March 25, stating that the government cannot ban an idea. Membership in the SKD was made illegal by the British government in February 2020. The channel claims that SKD has not disbanded and that the group has no connection to any other organization or network, with the exception of the Atomwaffen Division, which has claimed to have dissolved. The group allegedly stated on the channel that they will maintain a covert presence for recruiting purposes in order to invite pre-screened individuals to join. The channel also condemned groups that do public actions such as posting flyers. The channel contains SKD propaganda, a link to a group involved with the 3D printing of firearms, and encouraged individuals to wear masks while out in public, insinuating that they could commit crimes within the context of the UK COVID-19 lockdown."

Parents found using bleach to 'treat' children with autism

Substance promoted as a 'cure' for several serious diseases and conditions by a secretive church founded by a former Scientologist

MMS, the potentially lethal mixture pushed on parents by the Genesis II Church

Parents in southern California have allegedly been using industrial bleach to try and cure their children of autism.

The poisonous treatment, sold under the name MMS, has been promoted and pushed by a “church” with a branch in Los Angeles, where a group of mothers and fathers have reportedly been duped into regularly dosing their kids with chlorine dioxide.

The potentially lethal mixture is being touted as a cure for cancer, HIV, malaria, and Alzheimer’s, in addition to austism. Doctors say there is no evidence to support claims the harmful substance has any medical benefits.

The secretive Genesis II Church was founded by Jim Humble, a former scientologist, who has claimed in a video to be a "billion-year-old god from the Andromeda galaxy".

An in-depth investigation by Eyewitness News and ABC News found that followers are recommending and comparing notes on MMS – short for "Miracle Mineral Solution" – in Facebook groups.

The solution includes two chemicals – sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid – that combine to form bleach. It is usually sold to be taken orally, but parents are also told to use it as an enema.

The organisation, which describes itself as “non-religious church of health and healing”, claims MMS is no different from giving sacrament in church services. Proponents say it is "so benign you can use it on your skin, hair, ears, eyes, orally, rectally, vaginally, inhaled, etc".

But when mixed with fruit juice, as recommended, the solution acidifes to produce chlorine dioxide – a potentially lethal bleach used for stripping textiles.

The "cure" has already been linked to one death and there are several reported cases of those taking it suffering serious injuries. It was banned in Canada after it caused a life-threatening reaction in an elderly man. The US Food and Drug Administration warns that the product “used as directed, produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health”.

ABC News and Eyewitness News said one follower of Mr Humble, Kerri Rivera, a woman living in Mexico with an autistic son, became famous and makes a living from promoting his teachings. In 2013 she published a book called Healing the Symptoms Known as Autism.

In the book, Ms Rivera claimed parasites and other pathogens cause autism.  According to Ms Rivera, when the full moon rises every 29 days, parasites wreak havoc inside the guts of children with the condition. Chlorine dioxide can prevent this by killing the parasites.

“Autism is curable,” Ms Rivera said in a video. “I like to convince people they can cure their kids.”

She added: “I believe the missing piece of the puzzle to autism recovery is chlorine dioxide."

Ms Rivera instructs parents to give their children increasing doses of chlorine dioxide orally and by enema. Sometimes multiple enemas a day.

Dr Paul Wang, a pediatrician and the senior vice president of Autism Speaks, a nationally recognised US advocacy and support group, told ABC News and Eyewitness News parasites do not cause autism.

“No, parasites do not cause autism,” Dr Wang said, adding: “she says that MMS is not a bleach, but it is.”

The doctor continued: “And frankly, it's a poison. It should not be given to anybody with autism or cancer or diabetes or any other condition that they claim it can treat."

But ABC News and Eyewitness News found despite the warnings, there is a thriving, underground community of parents still using chlorine dioxide to treat their autistic children, clustered in southern California.

A private Facebook group called “CD Autism", has more than 7,000 members who share stories, including photos and videos of supposed "post-enema parasites".

“I started giving my son daily enemas four weeks ago,” one mother from Duarte, California, wrote, ABC and Eyewitness report. “Here's a tip: use lots of oil.”

“Can I try double dosing when he gets hyper?” a mother from Cerritos, LA, asked.

For one hour of consultation over Skype, Ms Rivera charges parents about $100.

She has claimed to have seen 234 people "lose their autism diagnosis with the protocol". She has also said there are no side effects to the treatment, which is out of the body "within an hour". Doctors say this is not true; taking chlorine dioxide orally usually causes nausea, diarrhea and vomitting. Followers of the church claim this is part of the "detox" process.

Ms Rivera insisted the potion was safe because it is chemically different from bleach, Eyewitness News and ABC News reported. She also claimed it's most effective when doses are timed to cycles of the moon. In November 2015, MMS use was found to have spread to the UK, with the first suspected case of a parent giving their child industrial strength bleach as a “cure” for autism investigated by Thames Valley police.

Other symptoms of chlorine dioxide poisoning, which doctors say can come from ingesting the substance include, bronchitis, wheezing, fluid in the lungs, headaches, breathing difficulties and a rapid heart rate.
