Book, New Age, Elizabeth Clare Prophet Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, Ashlen Hilliard, People Leave Cults, Workshop, Troubled Teen Industry, Netherlands, Cults and Law
A new book from journalist Leah Sottile explores the link between New Age spirituality and political extremism in our region and beyond.

"Leah Sottile didn't set out to write a book about political extremism. The longtime Pacific Northwest reporter has logged years exploring the Northwest's long history of right-wing militant movements. But when she started working on her new book, Blazing Eye Sees All: Love Has Won, False Prophets, and the Fever Dream of the American New Age, she was surprised to see major overlap between these spiritual belief systems and hate groups — especially in the West.

From Elizabeth Clare Prophet in Montana; to Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, the Yelm-based spiritual center started by JZ Knight, a Washington woman who claimed she could channel a time-traveling being named Ramtha; to notorious fascist William Pelley, Northwest communities and charismatic leaders figure heavily into the history Sottile maps out.

"I think it goes back to the way the West was colonized, and this perception that continues, in some ways, that this is wide open space where you can come and live out your utopian ideas," said Sottile of why the Northwest seems to attract a disproportionate share of New Age groups. The problem, she said, isn't so much individual beliefs: "There's no harm in my mind if you have crystals in your pocket or are engaging in a wellness retreat that is helpful to you." But when leaders claim to "have all the answers" or focus beliefs on hatred, "there is a real distinction."

This is what happened with Pelley. As Cascade PBS has reported before, he led a fascist group called the Silver Shirts and propagated antisemitic conspiracy theories. His campaign was headquartered in Seattle, and when he ran for president in 1935, Washington was the only state where his name appeared on the ballot."

Horrific accounts from survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI) have been shared in recent documentaries, books, and podcasts. Noting their implicit coercion and historic abuses, some have called for these types of youth residential programs to be abolished, citing the significant trauma carried by survivors.

This workshop provides a trauma-informed path forward in supporting and engaging survivors of the TTI. Attendees will learn about the historical concerns within the TTI, and be provided practical, innovative, and gentle ideas for how adults can provide empowering, healing spaces for youth and families in the wake of a TTI placement.

" ... The 14 mayors in the Twente region have issued an urgent letter to the national government, calling for stricter regulations on cults. Among other things, they want cult leaders and abuse to be dealt with more firmly and are calling for the establishment of a new reporting center.

"Municipalities are receiving signals about destructive cults, but current legislation offers insufficient tools to respond effectively," they wrote to outgoing ministers David van Weel (Justice) and Daniƫlle Jansen (Health).

Regional media outlets recently reported that there have been allegations of abuse for years at the Pater Pio Foundation, a controversial Christian group in Tubbergen. According to the mayors, such reports "underline the relevance and urgency of this issue."

The Cabinet is working on a bill to tighten regulations on cults. The Twente officials are supportive but believe that municipalities should be given more leeway to act earlier when signs of wrongdoing emerge, in order to protect their residents.

At present, there is a lack of coordination in addressing abuses within cults and following up on reports, the mayors stated. According to them, the Public Prosecution Service, inspectorates, and police operate too much in isolation due to the absence of a clear point of contact."

"A cult involvement is often a situation to manage, not a problem to solve."

"This book, which was written to explain these forms, is built on the knowledge and experience gained from years of working with families in workshops and in private consultations. This is not a "fun" book. Nor is it a book that aims to validate feelings of anger, hurt, helplessness, and fear, although it does that to some extent. This book is a handbook, a tool designed to help you achieve a goal, namely, to help a loved one. As with all tools, the book requires effort to learn how to use it. It is not something that you merely read. It is something that you use, something that you wrestle with, that you come back to again and again.

If you are willing to give the requisite time and mental exertion that this book demands, I am confident that you will find it to be extremely helpful. It may not solve your problem, for, as Mrs. Bardin states in the Introduction, a cult involvement is often a situation to manage, not a problem to solve. The book will, however, make you confident that you are doing all that you realistically can to manage, if not solve, the problem that has caused you so much distress.:

In this 2-part series, I first chat with Bob about his experiences losing his daughter to a high-demand group. Bob speaks about the heartbreak and difficulty in working out the best way to navigate the situation - from losing all contact to treading carefully to maintaining a relationship with his daughter, waiting for the day she comes home.

The Cult Vault: Author Zack Bonnie - "Dead, Insane or in Jail" & "Overwritten"
"  ... A special interview with author Zack Bonnie who has written 2 books about his time at CEDU and Rocky Mountain Academy. Zack's activism and whistleblowing work has opened doors into institutional reform around the world - highlighting the abuse that happens in these troubled teen programmes. Zack breaks his story up by inserting perspectives from other people in Zack's life during these experiences, with his writing also peppered in research and psuedo-explanations about cults and captive organizations."

Cults in the Occulture: Is Ramtha Real?
"After my [Joseph Szimhart] video on Channeling someone asked me to address Ramtha channeled by JZ Knight since 1977. I use the book Finding Enlightenment by J Gordon Melton (1997) as reference in which Melton tries to describe and explain the new Gnostic teachings of Ramtha. Melton arranged for Stanley Krippner, a parapsychologist with his team to test JZ to rule out fraud and pathology, which Melton claims they did. I argue that they did not because there was no serious peer review and no similar studies with professionals character actors to compare. To me, Ramtha is nothing writhing JZ Knight performing the character."

Cults in the Occulture: QAnon
"I [Joseph Szimhart] express my views on QAnon, the now notorious pro-Trump Internet conspiracy fad that had bled over into a pseudo reality that people believe. Families have been torn apart, ex- Qs claim it's a brainwashing cult, and people on the religious right and left are being manipulated from within the context of QAnon websites. I refer to Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco, the Federalist Papers, and Sir Francis Bacon. And I wear a tin hat to illustrate my point."

Cults in Occulture: Channeling
"Channeling or spirit possession has ancient roots in human religious behavior going back beyond oracles in Greece to the first shamans. Channeling takes many forms like infusing life forces into crystals using mental power to perform on a stage before thousands of devotees as if your body is possessed by an angel. Agency and influence formation are features of most channeling cults. Examples mentioned are Book of Mormon, OAHSPE, Seth Speaks, Ramtha, Lazaris, and Silva Mind Control Method."

NY Times: New York Threatens Orthodox Jewish Areas With Lockdown Over Virus
"Facing a worrying spike in coronavirus cases in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, New York City health officials began carrying out emergency inspections at private religious schools on Friday and threatened to impose an extraordinary lockdown in those communities that would be the first major retreat by the city on reopening since the pandemic began.

Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered the Police Department and the Sheriff's Office to enforce public health guidelines in several Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn, where residents often do not wear masks or engage in social distancing. But community leaders said residents have been resisting the guidelines because of hostility toward Mr. de Blasio and the growing influence of President Trump, whose views on masks and the pandemic have been widely embraced.

The crackdown is occurring shortly before Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, which begins on Sunday night, and it was not immediately clear the impact that the measures might have on the ability of people to gather in synagogues. The Health Department said that if significant progress toward following guidelines did not occur by Monday, officials could issue fines, limit gatherings or force closings of businesses or schools.

"This may be the most precarious moment we are facing since we emerged from lockdown," Dr. Dave A. Chokshi, the city's health commissioner, said at a news conference in South Brooklyn.

Officials this week released statistics showing that the positivity rate in some Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods had grown to anywhere from 3 percent to 6 percent, significantly more than the city's overall rate of between 1 percent and 2 percent. Officials are especially worried about the positivity rates in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park, Midwood and Gravesend, which they have referred to as the "Ocean Parkway Cluster."

Mr. de Blasio said on Friday on The Brian Lehrer Show that the city had closed four yeshivas over violations of social distancing rules."

"A lengthy NSW Police investigation into religious sect Twelve Tribes is expected to continue for several more months.

Strike Force Nanegai was established in September 2019 following allegations of unreported stillborn children. It is illegal not to report the births of stillborn children under the Birth, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1995.

Police are now investigating additional allegations against Twelve Tribes and have been gathering information since raiding two of the sect's properties in March, said Blue Mountains Police Area crime manager Detective Inspector Scott McAlpine.

Officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command first executed a crime scene warrant at the sect's headquarters at Peppercorn Creek Farm, on Remembrance Driveway in Picton on 3 March, 2020.

Days later, police entered the sect's remote property, Mount View Farm, surrounded by thick bush on Bigga Road in Bigga, two hours north of Canberra.

They worked through the day and under lights by night to dig for the remains of the alleged unreported stillborn children.

No remains were found at Peppercorn Creek Farm, while details of findings at Bigga have not been revealed by NSW Police.

Despite no arrests, the investigation is ongoing and should conclude at the end of 2020 or in early 2021, said Detective Inspector McAlpine.

The Bigga property was deserted by Twelve Tribes members during the March raid, however dozens of adults and children have slowly returned and are living there full-time in two sheds."

Coverdale Avoids Debt With Bankruptcy in JZ Lawsuit

Racist Rant Video Lawsuit: Judge Rules Knight Failed to Prove Coverdale Caused Willful and Malicious Injury

Andrew Kollar
Nisqually Valley News
December 21, 2017

Following five years of legal battles, JZ Knight is awarded nothing after Virginia Coverdale violated a non-disclosure agreement for leaking footage of a video that some characterize as a racist rant.

Knight is the head of the Yelm-area based Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment. She has what she calls “students” world wide. She claims to channel the 35,000-year-old Lemurian warlord Ramtha. Coverdale is a past student at RSE.

According to court documents, drama began to develop in 2007 or 2008 when Coverdale had an affair with Knight’s then-boyfriend James Flick. Upon hearing the news, Coverdale was expelled from the school but attended events some time later. In February, 2012 Knight allegedly channeled Ramtha in front of a gathering filled with RSE students and made statements referring to Coverdale as a “whore.”

Coverdale released video footage obtained from a third-party where Knight made what some claim were racist remarks towards Mexicans, Jews and Catholics.

“F--- God’s chosen people. I think they have earned enough cash to have paid their way out of the goddamned gas chambers by now,” she said to RSE students in the videotape.

In the video, Knight also said Mexicans breed like rabbits and are poisonous, all gay men were once Catholic priests and organic farmers smell bad.

Coverdale posted the video to YouTube Oct. 18, 2012 and a lawsuit was filed by Knight 11 days later. The lawsuit was against Coverdale and anonymous ex-RSE students for a breach of contract and injunction under the terms of a confidentiality clause.

Ex-students created an online messaging board where they would discuss concerns about Knight and her school. Knight tried to discover who was a part of the group by having Michael Wright, legal liaison for RSE, contact members of the group through email for litigation against Coverdale, according to court documents. The judge found Wright to be disingenuous in his reasoning behind the efforts and found the emails to be intimidating and suppressive to those who oppose Knight and RSE.

Knight was successful in suing Coverdale for violating the non-disclosure agreement and was awarded over $600,000. Coverdale countered and filed for voluntary bankruptcy, causing her debt to be discharged.

When Coverdale filed for bankruptcy, Knight filed another lawsuit of “abuse of process” and tried to form an argument of “willful and malicious” injury. The court did not find Coverdale to have improper motive in her defense and Knight failed to prove Coverdale caused willful and malicious injury.

Coverdale declared victory following the court ruling.

“Finally a judge who saw it all for what it was,” Coverdale said on her Facebook page. “He has restored my faith in the system. I cannot thank enough all who supported me over the years. I know it was really hard for you to watch me getting beat up by a criminal.”

Wright disagreed.

“Ms. Coverdale filing for bankruptcy is hardly a victory,” Wright stated in an email to the Nisqually Valley News. “It is an admission that she got in way over her head and accumulated debts that she felt she was unable to repay at present or in the years ahead without intervention by the court. It is the financial equivalent of calling 911.”

Guess who's a big Trump fan? Ramtha, as channeled by Democratic donor JZ Knight

The 35,000-year-old warrior Ramtha has come out as a fan of President Donald Trump, despite channeler JZ Knight’s history of big donations to Democrats.

Jim Brunner
Seattle Times
April 4, 2017

President Donald Trump is channeling a new source of support: winning over the 35,000-year-old warrior spirit named Ramtha.

For years, JZ Knight, the Yelm, Thurston County, mystic who claims to channel Ramtha, has been a big Democratic donor, sending piles of money earned from her for-profit Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment.

That caused embarrassment to the party when videos surfaced in 2012 of Knight/Ramtha making offensive comments about Mexicans, gays, Jews and Roman Catholics. After that flap, the state Democratic Party rid itself of $70,000 in Knight donations.

But like Rust Belt manufacturing workers and other traditional Democratic constituencies, Ramtha apparently shifted allegiances when it came to last year’s presidential election.

On Monday, Knight posted video excerpts of a Dec. 8 “prophetic vision” in which she declared in her Ramtha voice: “The greatest misjudgment of character came when you thought a woman should win this race.”

In the Breitbart-worthy spiel, Ramtha/Knight, smoking a tobacco pipe, goes on to attack the Clinton Foundation and says the FBI was behind the leaking of Democratic Party documents to WikiLeaks. “It was never Russia,” she says.

Ramtha cheers the new president: “That man is trumping deceit. He doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t do drugs, he does business!”

As a kicker, Ramtha predicts Trump will receive the protection of UFOs while flying in his jet: “And the first time he looks out the window … when he sees two silver disks as escort, he is going to know it all — and this is a man who is not afraid — he is going to know it all.”

Mike Wright, a Knight spokesman, said in an emailed statement that Knight continues to support Democratic candidates and causes in local and state elections.

“She did not vote for candidate Trump but she sees what Ramtha describes as ‘purposeful good’ in his election,” the statement said. “Ramtha’s prophecies teaching from December 2016 provides a dynamic perspective of these dynamic times.”

The Ramtha controversy that dogged local Democrats erupted in 2012 after videos were leaked by a conservative group of Knight, as Ramtha, making racist and offensive comments. That included referring to “the invasion of the Mexicans who just breed like rabbits” and saying Jews had “earned enough cash to have paid their way out of the (expletive) gas chambers by now.”

Knight’s defenders argued the videos were heavily edited and that her comments were taken out of context.

But the heat was too much for the state Democratic Party, which gave money she donated to a gay-marriage campaign and the Anti-Defamation League.

Still, Knight continued to send cash to the national Democratic Party and President Barack Obama’s campaign. She also has remained a major benefactor for the Thurston County Democrats, giving the group $50,000 last year.

There is no record of her donating to Trump’s campaign last year.

Ramtha Riled

Southern Poverty Law Center
Intelligence Report, Summer 2014, Issue Number: 154

By Susy Buchanan

YELM, Wash. — It’s March 2011 at the Ramtha School of Enlightenment (RSE) in this rapidly growing town just outside of Olympia. Hundreds of truth seekers pack into a converted horse arena to hear a 35,000-year-old Lemurian warrior speak the wisdom of the ages. The crowd is yearning for super-consciousness and enlightenment; what they get is drunken ramblings peppered with curse words. There’s no Kool-Aid served, just red wine, bottles and bottles of it. Wine ceremonies, which have been going on at RSE since 1996, are significant because students believe wine grapes were brought to Earth by extraterrestrials 450,000 years ago.

The blonde on stage is J.Z. (for Judith Zebra) Knight, a 65-year-old former rodeo queen and cable TV saleswoman. The words coming from her mouth aren’t hers, the assembled crowd believes, but rather those of the ethereal being she channels, Ramtha the Enlightened One. Knight goes back and forth between herself and the supposedly channeled Ramtha.

During the 16 or so hours the students spend in a spiritual drinking game (students must drink every time Ramtha/Knight does), Knight will disparage Catholics, gay people, Mexicans, organic farmers, and Jews.

“Fuck God’s chosen people! I think they have earned enough cash to have paid their way out of the goddamned gas chambers by now,” she says as members of the audience snicker. There are also titters when she declares Mexicans “breed like rabbits” and are “poison,” that all gay men were once Catholic priests, and that organic farmers have questionable hygiene.

These are not the kind of cosmic revelations that have drawn students to Knight for 38 years. For the most part, RSE students are thoughtful and well-educated, not apt to embrace a bigoted guru. For decades, the message had been more about finding the god within than disparaging minorities, and the blend of science and New Age Gnosticism made J.Z. Knight millions well before the drunken homophobic, anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic racist rants began to make their way into her preachings.

What happened at RSE would have stayed at RSE had it not been for the Internet. In 2012, livestreamed videos of Ramtha’s hate speech were posted to the Web, first by ex-students Virginia Coverdale and David McCarthy, then by a libertarian-leaning think tank called the Freedom Foundation that is based in Olympia. The excerpts from that wine ceremony left Thurston County residents shocked and wondering if there was a more sinister side to their kooky neighborhood cult.

Was there a hate group lurking in “The Pride of the Prairie,” as Yelm calls itself? Knight blamed Coverdale, who had slept with Knight’s boyfriend, as a spurned lover, and the libertarian-leaning think tank, the Freedom Foundation, as politically motivated.

But the scandal caused by the videos embarrassed Democratic candidates who had taken a total of $70,000 in campaign donations from Knight. “I am appalled by Ms. Knight’s outrageous anti-Mexican, anti-Catholic raging,” said Thurston County (Wash.) Commissioner Sandra Romero. “These vile, racist, and divisive comments against responsible and caring people have no place in Thurston County, or anywhere else.” Romero ended up giving Knight’s donation to nonprofits benefitting Latinos.

Through it all, Knight has ignored requests for a retraction and maintained that the videos were maliciously edited and taken out of context.

Melissa and Steve Genson, farmers and restaurateurs who also operate an online newspaper, were equally outraged, and Melissa, a CPA and fraud investigator by training, began an intense investigation into activities at RSE. “JZ Knight shrieks abuse and ridicule at her followers, and hate speech against Catholics, Jews, gays, and others — all welcomed with audience cheers,” Melissa wrote in one of a series of critical articles on RSE for the South Thurston Journal.

Ramtha Is Solely Knight's, Court Says

June 12, 1997
AP

VIENNA, Austria - The Austrian Supreme Court has ruled that spiritualist J.Z. Knight is the only person allowed to channel Ramtha, the 35,000-year-old warrior she says communicates through her.

The ruling means an end to the five-year career of Ramtha's German-speaking channeler, Julie Ravel.

The ruling, which followed a years-long international legal battle, was made April 22, court spokesman Heinz Klinger said today.

Attorneys received official word only recently.

Knight said she was overjoyed. "I didn't want the German-speaking people of Europe to be misled by someone who, under the name of Ramtha, was distorting his teachings and in some cases teaching things that were directly opposite of his teachings," she said in a news release from Ramtha's School of Enlightenment in Yelm, Thurston County.

"It is up to me to keep the teachings pure and uncorrupted and I take my job quite seriously, as you can see."

According to Knight, this enlightened leader from the lost continent of Atlantis first appeared to her 20 years ago in her kitchen, "bringing the message that God is within," her news release said. Then a housewife in Tacoma, Knight has parlayed her vision into the school - a mansion on a 40-acre ranch - with a following of 3,000 people in 23 countries.

Ravel contends the transcendental gentleman showed up five years ago in her crystal shop in Berlin, Germany, and selected her as his new mouthpiece. She says Knight had gotten "hung up" during channeling and become "unusable" as a medium for Ramtha.

The dispute reached the Austrian courts when Ravel settled in a castle in the village of Rannariedl in Upper Austria with her followers, who call themselves Light Oasis.

Spokesman Klinger said the court issued a cease-and-desist order. The ruling "is valid only inside Austria; it does not apply beyond," he said.

Ravel was also ordered to pay 10,000 Austrian schilling - about $800 - to Knight. Knight's Austrian lawyer, Johannes Hintermayr, was quoted as saying he reserved the right to sue Ravel for damages "in the millions."
