On the pious occasion of Birth Centenary Year Celebration of Mahahrishi Mahesh Yogi, his devoted disciple Brahmachari Girish, Chancellor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University and Chairman, Maharishi Vidya Mandir Schools Group highlighted the significance of the occasion at Ravindra Bhawan.

They said that, “100 such celebrations will be organised across the country throughout year. Further he emphasised on regular practice of TM and Siddhi programme through which one can attain success, peace and fulfillment in life. He added that, following the path shown by Maharishi, enlightenment and perfection in every aspect of life can be achieved’’. He was addressing a large number of guests, staff, students and their parents at a grand and ecstatic celebration organised at Ravindra Bhawan, Bhopal.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Alok Sanjar, Member of Parliament said that today is the great occasion as we are celebrating Birth Centenary Year of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Nana Deshmukh. Maharishi was a great saint who contributed immensely to strengthen the culture and education of our country.

Other prominent dignitaries who graced the occasion were Dr Mohan Lal Chheepa, VC, Atal Bihari Bajpai Hindi University, Dr Tariq Zafar, VC, Bhoj Open University, Dr Yageshwar Sashtri, VC, Sanchi Bouddha Indic Study, University and Professor Bhuvnesh Sharma, VC, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University.

To enrich the programme with cultural essence, several enthralling cultural programmes based on patriotic and spiritual themes were also presented by students of various branches of Maharishi Vidya Mandir. Rally taken out to spread the message on autism among children

A well-decorated bus preceded by a live music band helped spread the message of promoting greater social and educational inclusion for autistic children in the city on Saturday.

Organised by Pravaag Transitional Centre and School for Children with Autism, as part of World Autism Awareness Day, the rally was flagged off from Maharishi Vidhya Mandir School of the Hearing Impaired in K.K. Nagar by N. Swaminathan, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.

“People with autism spectrum disorder are often misunderstood in society,” said Mr. Swaminathan in his inaugural address.

“Regular education, training, and employment are essential to include autistic people in the mainstream,” he added.

Autistic children and their parents were among those aboard the rally bus, festooned with blue and pink balloons, cloth banners and public service messages about the neuro-development disorder as it went around LIC Colony, Mannarpuram, Arabic College, RPF route, and K.K. Nagar terminal before concluding at the Maharishi Vidhya Mandir at around 11.30 a.m.

The event attracted over 200 participants, including student volunteers from M.A.M College of Engineering, Siruganur, Rotary Club of Shakti, and well-wishers.

“The rally is our way of trying to break the stigma attached to autism,” K. Geetha Ramanujam, director, Pravaag, toldThe Hindu .

“We are seeing more cases of children aged below 3 and 5 (being assessed for autism), so more parents know about the importance of early intervention,” she added.

It was pertinent for parents to continue occupational and speech therapy classes to supplement mainstream education, said Ms. Geetha, who has been working with special needs children for 25 years.

This year, 10 students trained by Pravaag’s team of special educators will be placed in mainstream schools.

“We want to cut short all the inequalities because normal children are getting more benefits than autistic pupil in class.

Even though the government stipulates that teachers should be trained to adapt the syllabus for autistic children, not many schools are following it,” said Ms. Geetha. Guest of honour Almut Bruckner from Germany released autism awareness leaflets at the event.

Valli Meenakshi Sundaram, president, Rotary Shakti, gave out stickers with awareness messages.

Run organised

The Child Development Committee of Rotary International District 3000 in association with The Dolphin Special School and Team of Social Service (TOSS) conducted a run in the city on Saturday to raise awareness on autism.

More than 2,000 people participated in it.

The run was flagged off by Sakthivel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, in the presence of Laxmi Praba, NSS Coordinator, Bharathidasan University, and Allirani Balaji, Chairman, Child Development Committee, Rotary International District 3000.

Maharishi boss Varma out on bail

BHOPAL: After spending almost a month in Bhopal Central Jail on charges of rape, chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group, Girish Chandra Varma was released on bail on Friday afternoon.

Varma was arrested on December 29 for allegedly raping a former school teacher of Maharishi Vidya Mandir School for around 15 years and was sent to jail on judicial remand on December 1.

Varma spent most of this time in jail's hospital. For close to 10 days, he was kept in a barrack with 29 other under-trials, but was later shifted to hospital after her complained of blood pressure and increased sugar level.

A team of senior lawyers was trying for Varma's release since his arrest. But his bail application was cancelled twice in district and high court before it was finally granted on January 30.

Varma was greeted with handful of supporters outside the jail. After he came out the jail, he preferred not to interact with the media.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic Vishwavidyalaya (MMYVV) OR Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University is a public university located in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, India. It as established by the Act No. 37 of 1995 of Madhya Pradesh Government vide Gazette notification no. 537 dated 29 Nov 1995.

His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ji was the founder and the first Chancellor of MMYVV. At present Brahmachari (Dr.) Girish is the Chancellor and as per divine desire and guidance provided by Maharishi Ji, is trying to impart knowledge to large number of Students. Directorate of Distance Education has been established in 2006 and it’s office is situated at Lamti, Vijay Nagar, Jabalpur.

Cops take Varma to his ashram, carry out searchs

BHOPAL: Chancellor of Maharishi Vedic University and head of its group of schools, Girish Chandra Verma, who has been accused of rape by a school-teacher, was taken to his sprawling Bhojpur Road ashram by the police on Tuesday. During the journey Verma was seated between women cops in the police jeep.

Before leaving the police station, Varma reiterated that it was a conspiracy against him planned by those who lost their jobs at the ashram and at the Vidya Mandir.

Clad in whites, Varma was first taken to Mahila Thana from Jehangirabad police station in the morning. Apart from officials of Jehangirabad police circle, Nirbhaya mobile unit of city police also went to the ashram.

At the ashram, Varma, was greeted by hundreds of supporters as soon as the police jeep reached there. The entrance gates were locked as soon as convoy of police jeeps went in. For roughly four hours, police searched the entire ashram extensively. There was no electricity at the ashram initially, that hindered the search operation but later electricity services was restored. Officials also looked for any secret route or tunnel at the ashram.

Police sources said Varma's passport has been seized so that he cannot leave the country without informing the police while the white Audi Q7 car, in which the woman alleged she was raped last time in January 2013, was also seized. Police have seized some other articles and documents from the ashram.

The woman had told police that they could get her pictures, objectionable video of her made by Varma, pen drives and other incriminating documents at Varma's ashram. However, police officials said they went through a number of photo albums but could not found anything objectionable. Complainants have alleged it to be a bid by police to weaken the case.

At the ashram the police team was relaxed and seen sipping tea offered by the 'sevadars'. Police officials said they are looking for incriminating documents and trying to corroborate evidences.

Investigating officials have also not ruled out the possibility of getting the complainant and accused face to face for questioning so that the charges could be confirmed. The complainant was called at the Mahila thana for singing few documents in the evening.

Cops said Varma's tantrums about 'upwas, maun and dhyan'(fast, silence and meditation) are being used as a tool effectively not to cooperate with the investigations.

Varma would be produced in court around 4 pm on Wednesday. Police said they would possibly not press for an extension of his remand, which means that Varma would go to jail as chances of getting bail for him at this stage are bleak, the police added.

9 months on, cops record Varma’s statement in rape complaint

BHOPAL: Nine months after a school teacher levelled rape charges against him, Girish Chandra Varma, chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group, recorded his statement in Mahila Thana on Friday, and denied allegations. 

Clad in white kurta, Varma turned up at Mahila Thana in style, leaving others in little doubt about the clout he wields. 

When the complainant urged the police to register a rape case against Varma, she was told to move out of the police station. Varma, all this while remained comfortably seated in chamber of the station house officer for some five hours till his statement was recorded. 

The SUV, in which Varma reached the thana drew up in front of the police station entrance. Before Varma could climb out of the vehicle, city superintendent of police (CSP) Saleem Khan forced the waiting media persons to leave the police station premises with their vehicles to ensure a smooth passage for Varma's high-end vehicle. 

Varma turned up after two notices were slapped on him this month, sources said. In his 11-page statement, he denied the rape charges. He was accompanied by his lawyer. His supporters were standing outside. Police said he remained calm and confident while answering all questions. 

As for why it took months to record Varma's statement despite the complaint, cops were ready with answer. They blamed it on confusion about the case. The police said there was a reason as the complainant after approaching the State Women's Commission (SWC), had refused police action. 

On Friday, the complainant and her husband kept flinging accusations of police inaction. They duo said the case spoiled family's future. At one point, the teary-eyed complainant said she was forced to quit the job for raising her voice against years of sexual harassment by Varma. 

Instead of arresting Varma, police called my octogenarian father-in-law to record his statement on December 25, she said, adding that instead of getting justice, she is facing a defamation suit for raising her voice against Varma. Demanding Varma's arrest, the couple sat in front of police station, saying they would not move unless the influential Varma was nabbed. 

Holding a match box, she threatened to commit suicide if denied justice. The woman's husband said if people like Asaram, Narayan Sai can be booked for rape on complaint of women, what was stopping the police from filing a rape case against Varma. 

Varma's bail plea rejected

BHOPAL: Court on Thursday rejected bail plea of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University chancellor Girish Chandra Varma. Varma was arrested on December 29 on rape charge and was initially sent in police custody till January 1, thereafter he was sent to judicial custody till January 15.

Court of additional district judge Sayeda Bano Rehman rejected the bail plea filed by counsel of Varma. Varma's lawyer Vijay Chaudhary said, "The court rejected the bail plea filed by us," and refused to divulge further. Varma was arrested by Jehangirabad police from his sprawling 10-acre ashram on Bhojpur Road in Bhopal following a complaint filed by the victim about 9 months ago. 

Over 500 attend cultural meet

GUWAHATI: Over 500 students and delegates from across the country participated in the fifth Maharishi National Cultural Celebration, 2013, in Guwahati. The three-day cultural meet from October 26 to 28 was hosted by Maharishi Vidya Mandir (MVM) schools of Assam Region.

The MVM group of schools, which believes in the ideal "education for enlightenment", has 145 schools across the country. The schools are under the Maharishi Organisation founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, which impart transcendental meditation-based education.

The students, who came from 12 regions across the country, displayed their own cultures through their performance and their academic excellence during the three-day meet. Students of all 10 MVM schools in Assam came out with flying colours. The students of five MVM schools of Guwahati depicted varied tradition and culture of Assam.

The cultural meet was started in 2008 with an objective to promote a sense of healthy competition among the students of MVM schools. It was also aimed at evolving the schools as not only centres of academic excellence but also epicenters of cultural entity.

Assam DGP J N Choudhury, who graced the closing ceremony, praised the MVM group of schools for their unique system of imparting education in a different way where ethics form the foundation of a student's life. He advised the students to be more faithful to parents and teachers.

Varma sent to police remand

BHOPAL: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Vedic University Chancellor Girish Chandra Varma, who was arrested on Sunday on rape charge, was on Monday sent to police remand till January 1.

Court of additional chief judicial magistrate Varsha Sharma sent Varma to police remand till 4 pm of January 1.

Varma, who arrived in district court at around 1 pm and stayed there for an hour, tried to appear calm, but nervousness was evident from his gestures. In his one hour stay at court, he was frequently seen drinking water. He was sent to police custody for 3 days.

Husband of the survivor alleged that the couple is getting threats from supporters of Varma.

However, some of Varma's supporters also reached the court.

Varma was arrested by Jehangirabad police from his sprawling 10-acre ashram on the Bhojpur road in Bhopal on a complaint filed by the victim about 9 months ago.

Jehangriabad police station in charge Salim Khan said we sought remand of 3 days for further investigation and the court granted it.

Charges against Varma a conspiracy: Maharishi management

BHOPAL: Maharishi Vidya Mandir management has rubbished rape charges leveled by former a teacher on the chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group, Girish Chandra Varma, and termed it as a conspiracy against him.

Stating that the stated that the issue began only after Varma refused to pay money demanded by complainant's husband, director communication and publication, Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group V R Khare stated that complainant's husband never had any problem with the ashram during his 27-year-long association.

Khare said, that the complainant's husband had demanded money from Varma to buy a house in 2011 but when he did not get the money and was removed from the job in 2012, he started maligning Varma.

Varma has been locked in Bhopal Central jail after a rape case was registered against him on December 29. The middle-aged 'brahmachari' is unwell in jail and has been kept under observation by doctors. Jail officials said he is diabetic and his blood pressure is also not normal.

His bail application has already been rejected by the district court and experts say that now he can get relief only from high court.

Meanwhile, the police have also started investigating the counter complaints made by Varma against the woman and her husband on different occasions.

BHOPAL: Chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir group of schools Girish Chandra Varma broke his silence on Saturday by delivering a religious discourse to a group of inmates. 

Accused of rape, Varma was on a 'maun vrat' from January 1 to 3. 

He interacted with 29 other undertrials locked with him in a crammed cell of the jail and gave them sermons about life. The inmates in his cell seem to be enjoying his company. They have learnt to have requested the jail authorities not to shift him. 

On Saturday, Varma's mother and a close associate, Vasudev, visited the jail and met him. 

According to jail sources, Varma is learnt to have said that jail is the janam stahli of lord Krishna and soon, things would become normal. 

Varma said he wanted to resume work on the book on religion he was writing. He asked his mother and Vasudev to send the text of the book that he was writing so that he can finalize it, as he has a lot of free time in jail. As per jail manual, an undertrial is not forced to work in jail. 

The deputy superintendent of Bhopal Central Jail L K S Bhadoria confirmed to TOI that Varma's mother and his close aide Vasudev had come to meet him in jail. 

Regarding Varma's health, Bhadoria said he is a diabetic and takes insulin. As per court's orders, he has been allowed to take his regular medicine. His blood pressure was on the higher side, Bhadoria added. 

Varma was arrested on December 29 and sent to judicial remand after three days of police custody. He is accused of raping a former school teacher of Maharishi Vidya Mandir School for nearly 15 years. His lawyers moved a bail application in Bhopal district court that was rejected. 

Varma's supporters are keeping a close eye on his needs inside jail and on January 2 had provided him a bag carrying articles of basic needs. Jail officials said he is being treated as per the jail manuals and no special treatment is given to him. 

Maharishi boss now prisoner No. 6364

BHOPAL: From mind-boggling opulence of his sprawling ashram on Bhojpur Road, Maharishi boss Girish Chandra Varma is now Prisoner No. 6364 at Bhopal Central Jail. Tossed onto a 6x3 platform in a dank, cramped barrack with 30 other undertrials, Varma could barely shield himself from the night chill with a jail blanket. With one toilet for 30 inmates, Varma suddenly found himself squeezed in stinking environs from the lap of luxury. On Wednesday, he was produced in court and sent to judicial remand.

Earlier, Varma was on a three-day police remand on charges of rape filed by a former school teacher of Maharishi Vidya Mandir School on December 29. He went on a 'maun vrat' from Tuesday midnight and remained mum in the courtroom. Early on Wednesday, another drama was witnessed at the Mahila police station after the complainant alleged police had deleted some points from the complaint and was forcing her to sign documents, but she had refused.

The woman and her husband were forced out of the Mahila Thana, but police junked her charges. Police said the complainant had refused a one-on-one with Varma and this could have helped in proving charges.

Varma spent the last day of his police remand on the first floor of the Mahila Thana. He answered police queries in writing.

His supporters assembled outside the police station and some had easy access to him. At night, he would be taken to Jehangirabad police station.

Before producing him in court, police took him for medical examination around 3.15 pm and then he was produced in court. After 45 minutes of court formalities, he was sent on a judicial remand till January 15.

His lawyers plan to move a bail application on Thursday, but experts say Varma would get relief only from high court.

Varma appeared downcast while being taken to jail around 4.30 pm. Police told the court that they had completed their investigation and did not want his remand.

Earlier, around 10 vehicles of Varma's supporters lined up adjacent to Mahila Thana from where his supporters monitored developments. An influential industrialist from Jabalpur also visited Varma in the morning. And it's being alleged that police were soft on Varma at the police station and did not put curbs on movements.

The first complaint in the case was lodged on March 24. After nine months, police registered a case against Varma on December 29 and arrested him the next day. The complainant's husband told TOI that he has full faith in the judiciary. Varma had earlier alleged that he is being framed by employees sacked by the Maharishi Vidya Mandir administration.

BHOPAL: A day after recording statement of Girish Chandra Varma, chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group in a nine-month old complaint of rape against him lodged by a school teacher, the police on Saturday said their investigation continues and a case against Varma would be registered only after corroborating allegations.

Meanwhile, the complainant and her family alleged that the way Varma was treated when he turned up to record his statement at the police station underlines that police do not want a fair investigation in case.

The initial complaint against Varma was lodged in the month of March. Months after, Varma turned up to record his statement before police on Friday.

Officials said Varma's statement was recorded at length and questions were posed on him based on charges leveled by the complainant. The police said Varma has been asked not to leave the country without prior intimation.

Complainant's husband on Saturday came out with the pictures of Narayan Sai, son of controversial godman Asaram, with Varma and reiterated that the two are no different in many terms.

The complainant and her husband alleged that they did not have any option left but to commit suicide in case they do not get justice. The complainant highlighted how her family is being troubled and alleged police have directed her 90-year-old father-in-law to appear before investigating official.

Meanwhile, Varma is learnt to have told the police that the complainant and her husband wanted to blackmail him and rape charges against him are untrue.

Police have meanwhile said that they would register a case only if the leveled charges are substantiated by proofs and added they are yet to come across any such fact in the investigations done so far.

Assam governor welcomes proposal for 'world-class' university

GUWAHATI: Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik has welcomed a proposal to open a world-class university in Assam. The proposal was put forth by Maharishi Vidya Mandir Schools Group chairman Brahmachari Girish Chandra Varma. 

Patnaik assured Varma that the state government would extend necessary assistance to execute the proposal. His assurance came during the inauguration of the Maharishi National Cultural Meet-2013, organized by the group here on Saturday. 

Varma recalled the proud moments of a meeting between Patnaik and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi when Patnaik was the chief minister of Orissa. He offered to open the world-class university in Assam for propagating the ideals of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi along with imparting modern education. He emphasized on the importance of education based on transcendental meditation to remove negative energy from society. 

The governor urged students to imbibe the age-old education system of India for their spiritual, moral and academic development. He also asked students to develop a rational mind and to accept any fact or statement only after testing the same with reasoning and rationality.
