Trafficking: Seeking Solutions to a Hidden Crime | Markella Papadouli | TEDxVilnius

Published on Apr 29, 2016

Sadly but true... the human mind is impressively, sometimes perversely, creative when it comes to inventing new ways of exploiting a fellow human being. Trafficking can happen to anyone and in forms one would not find obvious- it’s not just the girl working in a brothel in the red light district and neither just the boy locked up in a makeshift cannabis factory.

Victims of trafficking can remain hidden in the most obvious places.

In her talk Markella offers solutions to this organized, systemic and hidden crime.

Markella is a Registered European Lawyer (Greece) and a Legal Project Manager for the AIRE Centre (Advice on Individual Rights in Europe), a London-based legal charity where she works with asylum and trafficking cases. Markella currently manages the Esmee-Fairburn-funded Trafficking Project, which provides free legal advice and representation to victims of human trafficking, training to relevant stakeholders, and represents the AIRE Centre at asylum and trafficking conferences worldwide. Markella also manages two other projects: the EU TRACKS project, which focuses on the nexus between asylum and trafficking, through the vantage point of vulnerable asylum seekers, and the EU FIRST project, which focuses on victims of domestic violence and gender-based violence.

She also lectures on European Asylum Law and International Refugee Law at London South Bank University.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
