Legislative & Legal

LSM: 'Psychics' scam two women for over 150 thousand euros in Latvia State Police in Latvia have launched criminal proceedings after two women were defrauded of more than €150,000 by online scammers posing as psychics on Facebook.

The victims responded to social media advertisements offering supernatural assistance, psychological help, and rituals to lift curses or fix personal relationships. Over extended interactions, the perpetrators manipulated the victims into handing over €118,000 and €39,000, respectively, through direct bank transfers, courier deliveries, and cash placed into parcel lockers.

When promised results failed to materialize, communication abruptly ceased. Authorities warn that large-scale fraud carries prison terms up to ten years.

The Salt Lake Tribune: What Does Falling Retention Say?

Recent sociological and demographic research explores the implications of declining youth retention rates across mainstream American religious organizations, particularly the LDS Church.

The analysis highlights growing divergence between traditional church culture and younger generations, driven by shifting views on social issues, historical transparency, and institutional authority. Sociologists note that retaining young adult members has become much harder as secularization rises and community engagement diversifies.

These retention shifts present urgent institutional questions for leaders attempting to adapt long-standing traditions to retain rising generations.

NEPM: A real-world study of Oregon's nonmedical psilocybin program shows promise

A real-world study published in JAMA Network Open by Oregon Health & Science University researchers evaluated outcomes among nearly 350 adults who consumed psilocybin at state-licensed service centers.

The analysis found the state's pioneering nonmedical framework broadly safe and well tolerated, with participants reporting notable improvements in mental well-being. Over half rated the supervised session as one of their life's most meaningful experiences.

While serious adverse psychological events were rare, researchers emphasize the necessity of ongoing monitoring, qualified facilitation, and balanced post-session support.

Science

Despite decades of scientific research, historical scrutiny, and rigorous debunking aimed at putting harmful psychological myths to rest, the discredited concept of "repressed memories" continues to resurface in modern public discourse.

A prominent contemporary example of this revival is Amy Griffin’s book, The Tell. In the memoir, Griffin asserts that she recovered middle-school sexual abuse memories during an MDMA session, yet she relies purely on subjective conviction rather than empirical substantiation.

Despite failing to obtain any corroborating testimony from teachers, peers, or professional investigators—and without ever confronting the accused party—she insists that intuitive certainty alone validates the trauma.

This flawed reasoning directly mirrors the controversial 1991 self-help guide The Courage to Heal, which similarly urged individuals to treat vague feelings and symptoms as definitive proof of past abuse.

By treating internal conviction as a substitute for physical evidence or tangible facts, modern narratives risk repeating the dangerous epistemological errors of past memory wars

International News

Ethnic rebel authorities in Myanmar have shut down multiple local Christian churches following escalating community concerns over alleged cult activities and deceptive proselytization.

Local administrative leaders enacted the closures to prevent social division, maintain public order, and address reports that certain groups were exerting undue influence over vulnerable rural residents.

The decision has raised broader debates around religious freedom, minority governance, and the challenges of regulating high-control religious movements in conflict-affected regions.

Community leaders emphasize the need for transparent oversight while safeguarding legitimate religious practices from exploitation by fringe organizations.
