White reportedly took classes at Scientology's Hollywood Celebrity Center months before her death.
Jim Carrey's late girlfriend Cathriona White was a Scientologist, Scientology journalist Tony Ortega claims in a new report.
According to Ortega, White joined Scientology four or five years ago, inspired by friends of musician Beck who reportedly encouraged her to move from Ireland to the U.S. to take Scientology courses. Ortega says he spoke with friends of White's who say Carrey knew White was a Scientologist when they first started dating in 2012.
"Cathriona’s friends say that they were concerned about Cat dating Carrey again [earlier this year]," reports Ortega, "But they were assured by Scientologists they knew that Cat was emotionally prepared for the challenge of dating Carrey because, they said, 'She had just finished the Purif and was doing her objectives.'"
"Purif" refers to "Purification Rundown," which, according to Ortega, is a process founder L. Ron Hubbard claimed could detoxify the body through sauna sessions and vitamins. Almost a year ago, White posted a photograph of her and her Scientology "twin," aspiring actor Travis Case," in a Purif sauna treatment. Scientology members are often paired together as "twins" while they undergo exercises.
White's friends told Ortega that she was working on her objectives as part of her "Survival Rundown," which is a course required of all Scientology members. White had reportedly been stalling on the Survival Rundown in the past six months.
"Saying that somebody was studying Scientology in the past and connecting that to a suicide is like saying a person who had previously studied the Bible committed suicide," a Church of Scientology rep told E! News. "It is sad and reprehensible that a paid anti-Scientologist like Tony Ortega is exploiting this terrible tragedy involving a young woman; it's a sign of outright bigotry."
